G50 tranny oil question...
I think I have a typical G50...a bit 'notchy' in the 1st-2nd shift when she's cold, which disappears after warm-up. I recently changed the tranny fluid with Mobil 1 75W90 (I don't know what was in there before), with the expectation that this might improve things. It seems to me, that if anything, the cold-natured "notchiness" is slightly worse, and I've even had it 'catch' once on the 3-2 downshift (while cold), so the search continues. I've heard some other folks recommend Redline and Valvoline as other synthetic options, and some (contrary to consesus) even suggest the Swepco for the G50. Suggestions anyone...Thanks!

same exact thing last month, M1 felt a tad worse than what was in there before but have no idea what was in there before me, or how long. Only thing I can say is, no it wasn't that blue colored stuff.
Also, just last week we changed to M1 in an '88 He says no change either, he did have the blue stuff previously. All this makes me want to change back to whatever was there before. All said and done I'll probably try all options over a years time just to see what feels best. |

I've got a G50/50 in a 930. The best I've found is redline MTL. It's not perfect at very cold temp's, but holds up a lot better on super hot track days than Swepco, and any other synthetic I've tried. Been using it for years, always with good luck.

Mobil 1 improved my cold shifting, but it was generally warm enough by the time I had gone 1-2 miles. Have you tried doubleclutching to see if that improves the shift?
Miata people swear by the redline, and I know it has been highly regarded in the detroit muscle crowd for a long time.

Thanks all! I think I'll give the Redline a try and see if it makes a difference....I'll post a follow-up later on with my results.

For some odd reason my earlier reply did not show up...Anyway, just switched from Swepco to Redline yesterday after reading that Swepco may not be best choice for my '88 G50. I have noticed a slight improvement as far as going into first gear BUT it's quite a bit warmer that the day before so that may have had some impact. I'll know better after the weather cools back down. I also noticed that there is slightly less noise/vibration coming from the gearbox/driveline which suprises me.

Just got my '87 back on the road with Swepco. Cold morning (30 somethin' degrees) but shifting was fine. No extra noise to speak of, but the exhaust of the 3.6 is a bit louder than what I was used to!
