1989 Carrera Fuchs: 6s and 8s or 7s and 8s?

I know that the OEM tire sizes are 205/55R16 and 225/50R16, but I cannot seem to get straight whether the OEM fronts were 6s or 7s. I'm thinking 6s in the front were standard/OEM for 1989?

Our '89 Cabrio has 16x6 fronts (205/55-16) and 16x8 rears (225/50-16).

although the factory did use 6's up front, i'd highly recommend going with 7's in front and 8's in the back.

What is the advantage of using 7s at the front?

Adds a bit of grip and arguably looks better. 205/55 is a better fit on a 16x7 than 16x6. The wider wheel stretches the tire out more and gives the tire contact patch a better shape. Not a bigger shape, mind you. Let's not go there............

Damn shame you don't see many of those phone dial wheels anymore. They look pretty good on 944's but never liked 'em on 911s.

I thought I liked 'em on 911s.

951 phone dials on a 911

I don't have 'em anymore because:

1. They look weirder the longer you have them and the fronts look wider than the rears

2. Somebody stole two of them (along with other stuff)

I've heard that some people have issues with rubbing or worse running the 7s in the front?

16x7 rubbing would be a good phrase on this one.

8's and 9's for me - a little rolling of the lips - but I like the meat!

Well, you asked a question that could be easily answered via search. If you aren't interested in running 16x7s up front, I'm not sure why you asked the question:

A 245 on 8s can be made to fit the front of a narrow 911 so a 205 on 7s should not be a problem.

if you lower your car running 7s up front can be an issue.

How come no one has mentioned 225 on 7s in front? I've seen lots use this (and 245 on 8s) on the track. Is this not a good combo? (I was planning on using 225s myself once I burn up the street rubber and get R Compounds).

Edward, you have to roll the front fenders for 225s on 7s in the front, at least the driver's side fender on LHD cars. I have rubbed a fender on a US SC with 16x7 fuchs +225 tires at full stock ride height, which compares favorably in height to a telephone pole.
