It's the Brake Pad Warning Light. If the light stays on when the engine is running the brake pads are worn excessively.

Don't be so hard on yourself. DUMB is spending $400 on a new alternator and THEN realizing the error.
And I'm willing to bet that you aren't the only one who's gotten the lights mixed up. On my '88 I had brake pads without a slot, so I just hooked up the sensor wire and zip-tied it to the cable. Gotta remember to check the pads, though.

And the voltage at the rear on the fuse panel, & at the alt.light. Then make conclusions. Monster batteries draw/suck down the alt. voltage too. You need to also measure the charging current INTO the battery.
