Koni's $@#&

Just going for shock value so that maybe I would get a response :O

Everyone talks of Bilsteins and their HD or sport varieties. Of course we have full blown race shocks also along with BOGE OEMs, but are the Koni's worthless?

I have not had much experience in driving different variations of 911s and setups, but I'm reasonably happy with my KONI's. Am I just a newbie and just don't realize my limitations with these so far? Should I just trust the current of the stream and switch up to Bilsteins when I break into the suspension? Every website points to the B's and many here seem to run them.

Do the Koni's have a place on a street/DE style car or should they be removed at the time I upgrade torsion bars? I'll probably go the recommended 21-22/27 bars, but I'm running large rims/tires and have lightened the 72 a little. All opinions and advice welcome.

I've been running Koni Sports for some 5 years now and love them. Street and DE... they work great. No experience with Bilsteins.

Some of the cars built with Koni's will only take Koni front shocks, unless you changeout the whole strut system that will accept Boge, Bilstien. The rears you can put any brand you like in. My .02

I use adjustable Konis on my '76 and they are great. Helped me get a good balance on my lighter car without switching springs or roll bars.

I am running the Koni Reds on my project. They are very smooth and I really like them. The non-gas will be a bit better on a lighter car, since you don't have to overcome the gas pressure for the shock to start movement/damping.

Bilsteins have excellent high speed and low speed damping characteristics and actually ride pretty well on the street. They have done a great job with a non-adjustable shock IMO.

The Konis are usually adjustable which can be an asset to fine tuning the turn in and transient response at the track (doesn't really do anything for steady-state cornering balance). The adjustability really doesn't do much for you on the street that you will likely notice (other than running full soft rebound setting and having the car bounce over bumps ) The Konis on a moderately stiff setting ride almost as good as the Bilsteins on the street IMO. BTW, these comments all pertain to single adjustable Konis. 2 and 3 way adustable shocks are best left to someone with plenty of set-up and driving experience as a novice is more likely to screw everthing up by messing with bump, rebound, and high speed damping!

If shocks are good, I wouldn't replace one for the other as they are virtually the same for all but the most sensitive drivers.

Coincidently, UPS just brought me the 2nd of 2 replacement Koni adjustables to replace the 2 that failed after a couple of years on the rear of my 944. I'll give Koni good marks for support but I think their quality could use some improvement.
After 2 years of of use mine would no longer adjust.

One of the two adjustables on the front of my dad's 951 failed with a month of use, but they replaced it with two free replacement inserts without any questions. I thought that was kind of cool.
