1984 3.2 pricing help

Hello,

Car is in Richmond, Va Black/Black , exterior is a 6.5/10, headstuds broke, engine was redone with raceware...changed out oil cooler to a Mocal., Done about 10k miles ago. Car has 106k miles on odo.

B&B exhaust and headers...factory tail, sunroof

dash is cracked in a few spots, dent on rear quarter, car has been repainted. 17" turbo look wheels with new kuhmos all the way around..could benefit from a good wash/wax and about four visits from the shop-vac fairy.

he is asking $17,000
I am thinking $15,000

I don't own a garage and plan to track the car...so I am not concerned about the paint. Plus the car will be a daily drive for a few years. yes, exhaust is a little loud

is $15,00 a fair price?

thanks for any help..i have driven the car, know the guy who did the rebuild and have not carfaxed it...it is going in for a PPI on monday...i will be doing most of the PPI as I "volunteer" at the shop who redid the engine...

tyler

When you say headstuds broke, do you mean that was the cause for the rebuild or that there are currently broken studs? I'd definitely lowball this car.

headstuds were reason for rebuild...thanks for your reply Kurt. I see you posted at renn as well.

Appreciate the advice, I usually overpay and wish I hadn't but the cars are so damn tempting. I am on my forth, the familys 8th. Dad had 4.

wish I could buy back my 964 but oh well

thanks again

Seems a little high to me. I understnad that the paint is not an issue for you since its going to be a track car but at $15k, I would expect a nice car.

As far as the engine is concerned, was the entire motor done or just the top end? Have you had a PPI and leakdown / compression checked ?

Any idea why the change to a mocal? I can't think it's better than the stock raidiator cooler.

I recently purchased an 84 in 9.5/10 condition and looked at many other fine ones, and agree based on your description that car is overpriced. I'm assuming that the head studs have been repaired. Even so, you should consider an offer well below his price or continue to look.

I just bought an 84 Carrera. The price he is asking is high. I would not go much above 13K

FYI,

I offered 13 today and raised to 14. He still wants 17. The PPI turned up that the car had been damaged in left rear quarter, bondo, orange peel, door lock has been changed so door key and ingition key are not the same....whole car has been repainted at one point or another...needed new interior carpet and sunvisors which are $150 a piece

Thanks for the advice, I feel that I did well by not getting the car. I usually end up paying more than I should for these cars. Back in the hunt until I find one I decide I can't live without.

Thanks
Tyler

With that new information, be glad you walked away. I doubt he will even see $13K for that car.

Good job keeping your head screwed on straight, Tyler. Passing on a car can be difficult. You'll find the right one... just keep plugging away.

hello again,

got an interesting message on my cellphone, seems the owner wants to sell now and will sell it to me at my offer, whether or not he means $13,000 or $14,000 was not mentioned

anyhoo, I am going to play dumb and say $13,000. I will walk at anything higher as I am not as interested in the car right now as I have other things.

That being said, do you guys still agree that $13k is a decent price, at that point, I really don't see how I could go wrong....I know things always break, but the wheels and exhaust could probably get me $4k on ebay, plus my dad and I are looking for a project car or sorts.

thanks again for any help, I am tempted just to tell the guy no thanks, but for $13k, I am a little tempted.

just one simple question, have you seen what else you can get for $13,000. If you haven't already checked, see what is listed on the PCA websight. THere you at least you know you are buying from other, hopefully honest, members of the same club. If nothing else this should give you an idea of what to expect to get for your money. I found a great deal on mine through there, and local to my home as well.

13K still seems like outer limits...

It should be a lot nicer to go any higher.

Good Luck!!

Look at the recent thread on cars and their prices. Could be helpful perspective. Is price the only reason to reconsider? That doesn't seem good enough, not for long term.

BTW - Not my car - no affiliation, just passing along. A G-50 Coupe would make a decnt track car if you ask me. G-50 robust tranny - remove some weight and go. Easy to swap in a 3.6 - you can even swap in a shortened g-50 or 915 tranny and move the engine forward.

i looked at autotrader.com, rennlist and others....seems like $13k is scraping the bottom of the barrel for 3.2 liter cars and newer...at least in the richmond VA area..i can't hit the PCA mart as I am no longer a PCA member

given that the car has been lowered, 17" wheel, headers/exhaust and no head stud issues.....all things I would have wanted to do with a realitvely stock car...I am going to give it a shot....only live once I guess

need a house too

thanks again, will let you know if something happens..if not no big deal...searching is half the fun
