Porsche Pickup

We all worried when Porsche talked of a SUV. I'm concerned that they have moved away from a serious GT coupe to look at full size sedans. I'm really scared though when I read in print that Porsche is considering a 4 door PICKUP! That is why I own a Ford is to tow the race cars....I'll have to sell it and buy the superior with no substitute Porsche Pickup

Or maybe we'll have to sell out our souls too and just buy Ferrari's where they don't build trucks but just sports cars.

Owe, did you hear about the next CS? Yeah exciting, they're looking to build a lightweight stripped down Porsche. Just what we were asking for in a Boxster for less money. You know a real track ready no frills car. Owe I'm sorry, I didn't mean serious car but truck. Yes there is plans for a Cayenne Club Sport two wheel drive for probably 2007. Sadly this might kick our buts for the pre- 993 cars, but so does the Dodge SRT10 and I'd still rather have a 911 or a Viper for that matter. Just blowing off some steam.

Any other thoughts? New source for some big brakes off the CS, Bill Verburg!

Has no one else seen the article about what their plans with VW look like in the pipeline or am I the only one who is concerned about the change in attitudes in Porsche? It was in a magazine this month, and wasn't in a joke section.

I recently watched the Top Gear episode on the Cayenne. They summed it up better than anyone I have heard thus far.....mainly pointing out that it is a superior SUV in every way, performing shockingly well in all categories, with amazing drivability and comfort....but all to shame since it is the ugliest car they'd ever seen.

".....honestly, I've seen more attractive gangrenous wounds than this. It is a monk fish amung cars. It has the sex appeal of a camel... with gingivitis! ...and frankly I would rather walk back to the studio than drive another yard in it."

Love that brittish humor.

For all the hysteria the Cayenne has caused among "the faithful' and warnings that it has ruined Porsche's image, the release of the 997 has been met with universal excitement and approval. Including even the Pelicanheads! Everyone seems to have forgotten it's water-cooled - no matter, it's got round headlights! Hmmm, maybe they can build an SUV and a world-class sportscar?

Times change boys. Ya either accept it, or ya turn into your Grandfather and say, 'back in my day, we had real cars and we walked thru 5 feet of snow to get to school ...... blah, blah, blah"

Hmmm... It seems like what everyone is lamenting is the loss of the Porsche mystique. Other than possibly Ferrari, what other manufacturer has been able to maintain a pure butt-kicking sports car image? No one. I don't want to see a truck either, but let's face it, the revenues from the Cayenne helped develop the 997. I would be more worried about a cheap, low quality, entry level a SPORTS car devaluing the Porsche brand, rather than another class of vehicle. That could happen should sales from the Cayenne or a truck drop dramatically.

I do not understand the concern with the Cayenne. This is a different company form the 80's. Porsche has had to change to stay in business. The 911SC's and Carrerra's were probably the last of the true sports cars made by Porsche. These cars would not have sold in the 90's. Porsche had to go more luxary to compete and from there, they go to the SUV and truck market.
The Porsche cars after the Carrera's do not do much for me in comparison to other sports cars of the same vintage, unless you get to a GT2 or GT3. But still, there is a lot of competition.
Porsche is doing what they have to do.

LOL Curt! I think the appearance of the 996 is too much like the Japanese car styling we see nowadays, and the 997 looks more like the 993, which is arguably a very striking car. Eventually we'll all have to get over the water-cooled engine issue. Of course, I'm in no hurry for that eventuality to occur.

Luxury schmuxury. My SC is as tame and comfortable as I ever need. Probably too much so. Frankly, I'm sure I'd rather drive an RS and even my car would probably make me happier if it had carbs.

I must say it looks better in prototype than I would have imagined. I just think its sad that Jaguar is looking at a SUV, and Porsche a truck.

Yes, strangly their is a luxury/performance truck market. I have a Harley Davidson Ford that listed just under 40 and they go up from there. SRT10's are 50k and they now come in 4dr automatic setups too. Mercedes build a pickup in Europe and VW obviously is planning it in the future. Cadillac and Lincoln also have played in this 50k+ market and to me this is a "premium" truck. NO rubber floor mats here.

Lotus at 2000lbs is pretty much staying with its roots. Though not as $$$ stabile, because of it.
