rip off

I don't post here, but I think that someone that is directly affected by someone's elses business practices should. Our shop has been redoing engines/transmissions for years from MM. What a piece of S##T! I am finally going to vent now. The last straw was a customer that found us after getting F####d so bad, I have to tell everyone about this. This person took his car to MM with a 3.0 liter/Webbers in for oil leaks. He left with a mag cased 2.2 911T motor with Zeniths. He was told that his core was not rebuildable, and the Webbers were no good. What a F***ING this scumbag did to this person. The last last straw was this transmission that I am trying to reassemble. This F***ING dirtbag tore this tramsmission so far apart, and did not return all the parts, that it is going to take me twice as long to rebuild. I do not understand why this dirtbag is still in business. To everyone out there read the fine print-with rebuildable core. There has never been a rebuildable core in his shop yet, yet there has never been a non-rebuildable core in this shop They will smooth talk you, take your stuff apart and then hold your car/parts for ransom.

Publications that accept advertising from less than reputable entities also have some responsibility. But it finally comes down to an informed, realistic consumer; it's not rocket engineering to add up the parts cost of a 911 engine or 915 tranmission rebuild and quickly conclude that a quality $2400 engine rebuild or a thorough $800 transmission rebuild is not very likely. You don't get something for nothing. If it's too good to be true, it isn't. Jim Sims

Sounds kind of like the trick where you take your expensive diamond ring in to be cleaned and the unknowing gets back a cubic zirconia in its place. Sorry for that guys loss.

what bothered me the most is that even Grassroots used their parts and mentioned them in their 911 build up. WTF? I know, they also mentioned Pelican in the same manner, but Pelican does not screw their customers like that. They may mix up your order but nothing like was described above (and they fix the mix up anyway)

Dave, I'm sure when MM knows they will be in a publication that they also advertise in, they go the extra length to produce.

Still, Otto and Henry S. have both spoken up in the last few months and exposed the BS at MM.

We have known for a long time (even before Pelican we talked about MM on Rennlist) about MM's poor practices.

I am very baffled as to why they are still doing business. There must be a ton of overseas customers out there, to support them, whom they screw w/o reaction from the customer. I would love to see there books.

I don't think the posts here and elsewhere (Rennlist for example) have stopped this. MM has been doing this for many years -- long before any web based Porsche boards existed (Rennlist started as an Email list server).

People need to send in written complaints to the Calif. attorney General's Office of Consumer Protection. They can do a lot to solve these repeated pernicious problems - even shut MM down. Too bad Elliot Spitzer isn't on this side of the US....

I've siad this before but it bears repeating: MM is not just hurting consumers, they are hurting reputable businesses. It's guilt by association. For example, even tho Otto - who started this thread - has been in bussiness for decades, the novice owner doesn't know the difference. MM is screwing with our community and that's the bottom line.

Otto,

One issue is that there are actually people out there who say they have had a good experience with Motor Scheister (Motormeister)! All someone has to do is do a search of the internet to find more crap on them.

Another thing that pisses me off is that Rennlist lets them be a sponsor, which to someone not "in the know" about them might sound like an endorsement. http://www.rennlist.com/spnsrs/motormeister.html

Glad that you came out in the open with this. You have a good reputation and this may sway others to find a honest shop the next time they are looking for repairs!

MM are probably still in business because they chase the overseas customers. When I was looking to rebuild my 2.7 motor to race specs, a while back i sent an email requesting information. I was bombarded with phone calls and glossy printed material.

I decided to not go ahead with them when i asked if the 2.4T MFI pump needed to be rebuilt to 2.7RS specs and they advised me that it would work just fine.

Oh by the way the quote for the rebuild ended up being $27k US not AUD.

The salemanship that i saw from that organisation was quite amazing.

Once I said i was not going to get them to do the work they got quite annoyed.

interesting letter reply in the latest excellence about how they will not do an article on a car in exchange for payment from a parts company....anyone would let them pay for advertising but I bet Grassroots got a nice penny each time they say who's parts are used in a car review....all BS if you ask me...considering most people just lay roll cages in their cars without bolting them in and double-sticky tape fire extinguishers to their a-pillar that read grassroots and sport compact car anyway

thanks for the heads up, i would have used them based on their print ad, appreciate the candid advice

I've heard the same thing over and over again.
Many times I've thought that I'd like to take an engine that has every piece professionally documented as far as condition, secretly mark every single part in a way that would only be detectable to the person looking for the marks, and send it to MM and see what happens.
I'll never do it but it does sound like fun.

Anyone report these guys to the better business bearue? This is the second post in a week about MM using tailpipes in an un-orderly fasion. Seriously, anyone have an idea what we can do (within the law) to get more awareness to those who could have their tailpipes violated by MM?

For those who don't like to fallow the law, i just learned the other day that when in a boat in international waters (however many miles off the coast), if you are going to starve to death, you can legaly not get procecuted for any "Donner Party" activities. Of course, it would be hard to prove if you accualy ate those on board, or just went chumming. I am not suggesting anything, just simply sharing info on the chat board Anyone have a boat?

I've read a number of threads about MM and have looked at their website -- I suspect they attract a lot of business because they "low ball" on the price to get the customer's initial business.

Low balling is a common practice in businesses like moving, contracting and auto repair. Once your possessions are in the moving van, you don't have much negotiating power when contesting the extra charges; once your bathroom floor is torn out, you have difficulty arguing against the cost overruns; and once you motor is disassembled, you're "at the mercy" of the mechanic who is telling you it's going to cost a lot more than what he estimated.

Reputation is important in choosing such services, but since people rarely purchase such services more than once in their lifetime (how often do people have a motor rebuilt?) a business with a "slick" sales team can continue in spite of their poor performance. They just don't have to rely on the "repeat" customer they way other business do.
