Cool My First Track Day

Well, I took the plunge and took my car out onto the track for the first time ever last weekend. What a blast! Why did I wait so long to do this? You really cannot get an appreciation for your car and its capabilities until you’ve put it on the track can you?

The track day was conducted by our local P-car club and was held at Queensland Raceway about an hour west of Brisbane. As it was my first time out, I only did the morning ‘untimed’ session for driver training, just to get a feel about what its all about. But still managed to get about 28 laps under my belt in 4 sessions, three of which were dry and one wet. The wet session not surprisingly saw the most action for me and a number of other drivers. I managed to have a ‘loose’ on two occasions, one sort of expected and one totally unexpected. All part of the learning experience I guess!

As I said, I had a fantastic time and look forward to doing a lot more next year (this was the last event for the year). I was really amazed at just how much these cars ‘talk’ to you on the track. You can feel or sense every little change in grip and attitude both through the wheel and the seat. Amazing!

In any case, here are a couple of shots of the action.

That looks like a lot of fun. I can't wait for Spring so I can get back on the track. Thanks for posting the pics, Sheldon!

Great action shots!

Did you do anything special to prep the car aside from the usual oil/tyres/fire extinguisher check?

Awsome! Thanx for sharing the experience. This spring will be my first DE. Did you pay for those pics? Great shots. What do they normally charge?

Thanks guys,

Yes I did the usual prep work including new flexible brake lines, flushed the system and replaced the stock fluid with AP Racing 551, changed the transmission (to Fuchs semi synthetic) and engine (to Fuchs synthetic) oils and fitted a fire extinguisher. Will start on the more expensive side of things (tyres, bushes/mounts, shocks, sway bars, torsion bars etc) gradually, starting next season with the suspension bushes and mounts and some semi competition brake pads.

The photos were taken by a mate of mine using his new digital camera (5.1 megapixels). He did an awesome job and took some great photos and videos. By the way, how do you post videos to this board?

I would advise you to search the BB for info on trans oils. You shouldn't be using any synthetic on 915 transmissions. They need friction in order to shift smoothly. Other posts go into great detail on this subject.

armandodiaz,

Yes, I am aweare of this and will be changing back to a mineral based product asap. Luckily the Fuchs oil was not overly expensive (about $25).

Thanks for the 'heads up' though.
