1972 owners or the all knowledgeable please read
Hey guys . Its been a while for regular visits for me(wife just had our 2nd baby boy). I need a few answers and hope some of you guys can help me out. I just bought a very very nice heavily optioned 1972 911t coupe with only 57k original miles and one owner (untill me of course) . Aside from a long crease that runs the length of the driver side the car is near perfect . This week I started taking it apart in preparation for the body shop . I noticed a few things that had me wondering if they were correct. Here`s my questions .
1 : What type of horn grills were used ? Were they steel or plastic ? Were they chrome or black ? Mine are plastic chrome 2 : What lense trim was used for the 72 cars ? Was the front turn signal and rear tailights trimmed with black or chrome ? Mine are chrome. 3 : Which style hood emblem was used ? Was it the orange bar ? Red bar ? Was it the totally flat style ? Or slightly curved ? Mine is red and flat . Guys please only answer if you are sure . relize that what your 1972 is presently equipt which may have been changed as well . These are parts are are frequently replaced and thats why its so hard to know whats original anymore . Thanks , guys Kurt Williams

1. chrome horn grills. factory were metal, aftermarket can be plastic.
2. chrome trimmed lenses. Switched to black in 73 3. All early cars had the orange bar hood crests. How is the turbo project coming along? I don't think I ever saw pictures of it completed.

Turbo project ? Well ..... Once the wife was 5 months pregnant I didnt put my spare time into it . I now have every part needed including a fuel safe fuel cell I just bought this week . You know how it is when you buy a new/different car . I started digging right in on this 72` instead of assembling the turbo project . You would think after spending $60k+ in parts that the car would be together right ? Well I have no real excuses in my defence. Either way the body shop will be finishing the 72` and I will start assembling the 69` turbo project over this winter.

Congrats on the '72 and the new addition to the family! AFAIK, all of that stuff is original on my '72 and it all matches what Jamie wrote.

Checking my '72, jpnovak has it right-- his answers at least match what are on mine --which is pretty close to original. HTH

Yes jpnovak is correct.
Should have a aluminium engine grill also. The black trim came in on the 73's. Do you have the "S" pack on your car? Wide rubber strips, gold lettering, and "S" callipers. They should be silver if they are? Show us some pics!

Yes, they went to black beginning with the '72 model years...but those black engine grills are made of aluminum, anodized black...

In 72, all horn grills (except through-the-grills) were chrome plastic.

I should also note that I had a set of oem porsche NOS plastic horn grills that were still in the original porsche bags . So porsche did make them in plastic too.
Paul whats on your car ? Kurt Williams

Here`s a picture of the other 2 types of hood badges . The one that came on the car is one of them . Someone said the orange bar crest is the correct one. I always thought that 69` was the last year for orange . Notice in the picture there are 2 different reds . Which one do I use out of the 3 ?
Kurt Williams ![]() And another picture with different exposure time(more light).

Here is a few more questions .
Notice the knob to the right of the rear defroster switch . The screw nut is not chrome like the others. I believe this is for the fog lights right ? From what I know the crhome screw nuts(bezels) are standard with the S trim package which this car has. Is the black bezel correct ? Maybe fog lights (type 169) where installed by the dealer or previous owner ? Here`s the picture. ![]() Also this switch has a black bezel . And what does this switch do ? It has a little green center light in the knob . ![]() Thanks for all the help guys Kurt Williams

Kurt, here is a photo of the badge on my original-paint '72 S. I don't think it has ever been off of the car. The badge is just a bit more orange in person; the flash made it a little redder. I would say that the badge you are holding on the left most closely resembles the one on my car. Good luck.
