I pulled the pads out of a set of early Brembo 2-pots and out fell the two metal cylinders you see here. What are they there for?

Jon,
Assume that the pistons are still in the calipers? Thats very interesting... JoeA

Yes--the piston are the same outward-facing cup shape as on most calipers. The slugs were loose inside the cups. I was guessing maybe they were there for some sort of damping effect to prevent squeeling?

PET confirms--"vibration damper"
So the next question is: what makes these calipers so susceptible to vibration that they need such a kludgy solution? I have nearly identical (but 14 years newer) calipers on the back of my Subaru. I'll have to check and see if they have the slugs. |

It's not really a damper but more of an adaptor so that the small spyders(the real dampers) can snap into the pistons w/o a redesign. These were an after thought on that caliper.
This is a set of 4 dampers for 1 4 piston caliper, the flat face is bonded to the back of the pad, the spyder snaps into the piston. ![]()

You would be frightened to know about the amount of added vehicle mass happening in auto engineering - esp as it relates to dampers.
99% of dampers are after-thoughts or band-aid fixes.

I think it was cost benefit thing, they knew that those calipers were only a short term solution so didn't waste anything on doing them right.
By the way the spiders aren't really necessary, I use them if they are free, but only on a street car. Never on a track car.
