Inane heater controls
CAn any one explain the heater controls to me. I cant seem to figure out what does what except for the front windsheild defrost. It seems like when i want heat it doesn't come from anywhere it just starts to get warmer.

Do you have an owners manual? There is a decent explanation in there. When Porsche sold the car they should have stuffed a guy from M.I.T. in the glove box to explain the heat/defrost controls.....

These images were posted in another thread. Since my search-fu is weak, I'll just repost them (sorry Wayne). If it's any consolation, I've owned my car for over a year, and the heating system still makes little or no sense to me. Mostly I just pull randomly on levers until I get what I want. Nutty.

Prior to 86 the top lever has one knob...not two that can go either left or right separately.....should be the same in principle.

In the 912 my wife is driving, I leave it warm. She opens the window to regulate the heat. The window is easy to figure out.

I was just about to post a similar thread... So how do the levers between the seats play into all of this?
Also, if I were to mount 74 and older HEXs, what modifications to my heating system are required? Do I have to remove the auxilary fan? I've done some searches on this and still am not 100% clear. Sorry to Hi-Jack the thread.

The levers between the seats are the flapper valves that open, open partially, or are closed for the heat supply from the engine to the cabin. Once they are open, or open part way then you have one lever on the dash that controls whether the heat goes to the floor or your windshield. you have 2 other levers (or maybe 3 for some years) that control if/how much fresh air you get and if that fresh air goes to the floor or the windshield.

I have auto heat in my SC, and It has two tempuratures...scalding hot...basically whenever I have the heat on....does not matter if the setting is at one or nine. And of course bitter cold, when the heat is off....So like a previous post, I go with scalding hot and crack the window..people give me neat looks as I am cruising along on a 20 degree day with the window open!

Here's the way I look at it. There are three seperate systems, heating, ventilating and (maybe) air conditioning.
For heating the blower is located on the engine; the between-the-seat levers control the volume and the lower dash lever controls the distribution. For ventilating the upper dash lever-left controls the volume, the upper dash lever-right controls the ventilating blower. The middle dash lever controls the distribution. For Air Conditioning there is a third set of blower, volume and maybe distribution knobs and levers. Simple, huh? |

You did not say if you have a coupe or targa. My ex-wife's 81 Targa had a temp sensor behind the windshield that somehow talked to the controller between the seats and if the electric motor in the controller was working it was pretty much automatic. Thats in theory... JoeA

Since you don't say what year your car is we can't be of much help, but the heat in most 911's comes out at the floor or the windshield, but starting in, I think, '87 it also came out the two side dash vents, but never under any circumstances did it ever come out of the center vents.

Heat can also come out my dash side vents....85 Carrera with auto heat and A/C...

I was having the same problem identifying the controls. I am having trouble understanding, which way do I move the levers to have them on and off? Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the levers that control the heat/air and connect to the blower?
Also just to add, my car (1976) has 2 levers in the top notch. Thanks, Matt
