Unhappy Rear seat rust repair yuk, need sheet metal

Hey everybody,
It looks like I'm going to have to conquer the somewhat common rear seat rust repair. I had a rear window leak and found this under the sound deadening mats. I've been trying to clean it up to see where the good metal starts. I'm not sure if I should take out the whole area all the way across or try to salvage the part over the transmission. There are a couple of small holes (.25") over the transmission. Does anyone have or know who would have the sheet metal to replace this area?

Check out this thread.

We have the Technology...We can rebuild her...

Been there done that. I was lucky and someone sent me the whole panel. I thought about piecing it in but ended up welding the whole thing in. Looking back I think it was the way to go. Try Jerry at Euroeast. He parts out P-cars. When I did my car Restoration Design didnt have the panel available new but they were working on it. Hope that helps. May the force be with you.

You will need to use a metal sheet to cover the seat hole. Use rust treatment and some metal filler.

Hammer, did you mig or tig weld the panel? You didn't have to pull the engine to seal the bottom?

I need to do the same job on my '72. It is bad on the shelf with a couple of pinholes down in the seat wells around the tranny tunnel. This is not a job that I'm looking forward to and I'll keep putting it off as long as I can. The only times my car gets out a garage these days is when its on a trailer or its at the track. So the rear window seal doesn't get much of a chance to leak. I also took out all of the sound padding that holds water and keeps the rust growing.

If anyone has a rear section similar to what was donated for Shawn's fix...I'm listening. Of course this is after someone donates or locates one for Jeff.

I always figured that if my car was rusty like that I would figure out a way to make a removable panel that I could remove and reach under the car, and one on the firewall to reach the back of the engine (when I had CIS). But I am crazy.

I used the factory spot weld locations to weld it in from the top. I used a mig welder. No issues to date.

Wow, what a small world it is! I thought somebody got in my garage and took pictures of my rusted out rear seat and shelf panel in my 71T. I'm cuting the bad out and not even replacing the rear seats. Were going to custom fit a new shelf and slope it down to where it meets the top of the tunnel cover. I'm going to mount my stereo gear on the rear shelf which will sit over the rear floor section where a custom subwoofer enclosure sits. Going to weld in a panel from the bottom over the top of torsion tube. Both of my brother-in-laws are fabricators and one owns a shop so metal is all free (Praise God). I will post pictures as the process takes shape. Considering relocating batteries underneath it all, but front is gonna be so light and the 3.5 N/A engine, I'm afraid of the front end being a little loose with the whole front end fiberglass and only a 12 gallon fuel cell upfront. So........ we shall see.

Jerome, I'm interested in some metal from those 68s. I was able to replace the fuel pump from inside the car through the rusty hole in the seats. hehe
