Angry Bentley manual irritation -- no heating info

Just got the Bentley manual for the 84-89 911 in the mail, in preparation for fixing a number of things on my 84 Targa.

However, the ONLY version of the absurdly complicated 911 HVAC system on the 911 that seems to be covered at all in this $95 manual is the 87 with Automatic Heating. They don't even bother with a single diagram or explanation of the manual heating system -- such as the one I've got. Rrrrr. So I'll be operating on guesswork while I try and fix my (partially non-functioning) heat.

Oh - and it doesn't have the complete wiring diagrams for the non-Automatic Heating 1984, either, with answers to such questions as "what circuit actuates the footwell blowers" or "what fan does that big 3-position dial behind the heat exchanger levers actuate".

Wouldn't have minded if they'd bothered showing any diagram of the heater box flappers, either -- like maybe their precise location on the car. I don't have a garage right now, which makes jacking up the car a pain, so the "reach and feel" method is a lot more practical for me than putting the car up on jackstands and spending 20 minutes searching out the location and figuring out how they work.

So, can anybody recommend a source with actual diagrams for the manual heating system on an '84 Targa? Even better, just post them somewhere?

I'm trying to figure out if the lack of passenger side heat or defrost is due to a non-functioning passenger side footwell blower, a passenger-side flapper that doesn't open (though I've got full travel on the lever), or both or something else (hey -- a diagram of the vent system would've been cool too!)

As long as we're at it -- do the footwell blowers send air to the defrost vents, or do they shut off and does yet another blower send air to the defrost vents?

The driveline sections looked pretty good in the Bentley, but I'm really quite disappointed that they'd leave this whole, quite troublesome, system out.

Will

The earlier cars had diagrams in the owner's manual. Did they stop doing that?

Drive at 70 mph and check air flow there - if absent then your flapper is stuck open, or the ducts are blocked.

If you take off the passenger side kickpanel (screwdriver only needed), and turn on the heat you can listen to the motor hum away. It's easy to see everything going on once that panel is off. The motors just sit in there parked on the incoming heat ducting. You will also note if there is a trashed hose there. When you're running the heat, check to see if heat is wafting from from the kick panel area. Those hoses tend to get trashed.

Also, if you take off the guard in front of the hosing in the trunk, you can then flip the little lever and forth from defrost to below..just follow the metal cables and you'll see where they're hooked up.

By default, it's spring loaded to go defrost by default (if cable breaks or it gets disconnected).

With the heat on, and getting your ear down there, you should absolutely hear the motor running. They're definitely audible.
