High torque starter recommendation
Any recommendations for a high torques starter (for higher compression 3.4 engine)
Considering Tilton 3HP, WOSP, SSP, PMB, IMI - or wherever your experience has led you. thanks |

Wosp
I've got their high torque starter on my 2.8, with 10.5 JE pistons, spins right up :-)
Only have about 200 miles on the raging - restomod. No porblems, but have no idea of the potential long term durability. Probably be just fine. c |

I have had the IMI for a few years on an 85 with stock drivetrain. I installed it. It has been working just fine!

Brise Co-axial starter. Tiny, doesn’t weigh much, used by Singer

The Brise unit sure looks nice, the fact that it's used by Singer is a good endorsement. Under 6 lbs is impressively light. A bit expensive.

An IMI 101N is 25% the spend of that Brise. But if you have the dough for that show....

I've equipped my '88 911 with the IMI starter several years ago. Being a reduction-drive starter, it cranks the engine a bit slower than the OEM Bosch. But the engine always starts after about a 2-second crank. I'm pleased in all respects.

And this is before you figure in whatever tariffs are arbitrarily applied to the shipment.

I went through two different Bosch starters, one new out of the box. When I did a long road trip of 10 to 12 hours in the summer heat, the Bosch starter would get a heat soak, and just lock up and be non functional. I had both checked at starter rebuild shops. Both said it is now fixed. They were wrong. They worked just fine is around town driving. It was the worst if I arrived at the hotel after a long drive, stood in line, and registered, got my room key, and a map to my room. 20 minuets time. Them I had to push start the 911. ![]() I have had my high torque started for 60,000 miles and many more long summer time trips, and it always spins the engine as designed. It is a wonderful sound that sure beats silence when twisting the key.

Reduction drive starter sound reminds me of a '70's vintage Plymouth Belvedere with a 225 cu in slant 6. But you get used to it. Reliability is what counts.
