is this a shifter bushing issue???
 

Hey folks. This is my first post (pics attached). I purchased my 86 about two weeks ago. It had a PPI and passed without any major issues. Even compression across all cylinders, most everything works, etc... 930 tie rods, chipped, cat bypass (yet to be put on). The car has been running great and I have put about 500 miles on it in the first two weeks. I can't seem to leave it in the garage even though it is not my daily driver. Anyway, I went for a shift into 5th and the shifter swung around about 90 degrees. Now it is all loosey goosey. Did some clean-up in the yard...anyway, shifts fine as long as I have a tight grip on the shifter. It swivels around if I don't.

Do you mean the shift knob? Or does the entire shifter actually rotate? The former is easy to solve. ;) Dunno about the latter.

It could be two things. There is an epoxied joint in the shift lever that can let go, or it could be the tapered pin that holds the shift lever to the linkage has worked it's way out.

It sounds to me as though it is the epoxied joint. In my case the pin sarted to work it's way out and the shift lever turned slightly, the epoxied joint works great as long as the shift lever is in it's normal plane, but once it was out of line the joint failed. Both of these issues are easy fixes ( a couple of hours).

I think that I did a posting about the fix, let me see if I can find it.

Hmmm...broken shift pin maybe....:( You need to put a short shift kit in anyways....

You didn't mention if it had a short shift kit or not, some of the older kits you had to glue or epoxy the shifter lever-sounds to me like that came loose (happened to me). You may just need to epoxy the shifter lever in place.

I think if pull back the shifter boot, you will find the handle is actually two pieces glued together:

You could probably seperate the two pieces, rough up the surfaces with sandpaper, and JB Weld them back together.

Thank you everyone for the info. I'm amazed at what an incredible resource this forum is. Sounds like Jim found the answer. The description of the shift pin working it's way out and the epoxy giving sounds right. If it ends up being something different, I'll post. Just in case anyone checks this thread with the same issue, the shifter is held in place with some sort of epoxy. This problem was solved with a little JB weld on the shifter and was an easy fix that cost me $8.00.
