1990 C2 windshield into a 1980SC

Today I purchased a used windshield from a 1990 C2 . I was told that as long as I use a C2 rubber seal it will fit into my 1980SC Targa. Has anyone else done something like this before. I think I have gotten a great deal on the glass it only cost me $140.00 total.

Pat - I have heard about 75% of the time that it will work if you have the correct rubber. About 25% of the time there were problems like 'too tight a fit'. This may be due to age or collision issues on the older 911 that were not a factor with the original glass and rubber. I would give it a try since the odds seem in your favor.

You may want to email John Walker. I seem to remember him commenting on this in the past.
Good luck, and share your results-

My guess is the glass is the same but the gasket doesn't use the metal trim.
I also think you could get a new aftermarket (PPG) glass installed for around 150.00 in the SF Valley or L.A. If this doesn't work out for you.

Give us a progress report on your SC

I have no intentions of using the old 80"s rubber but I did take the old rubber seal and it fits around the glass with just a little bit of looseness. The dismantler shop told me to purchase the C2 rubber seal which is thicker and it compensates for the smaller size of the glass. There is no grove for decorative metal trim but I can live with out it. The glass is tinted and has the green strip of shading on the top of the glass. It has the built in antenna and the mirror is still mounted.

Bob, I did a search for glass replacements and the cheapest quote I had was $380.00 installed after a $100.00 discount special.

I am optomistic that it should fit if I buy the C2 rubber. with the price of the glass and the rubber I should be able to do it all for under $200.00

Pat,
You have to go into the the seedy underworld ( in daylight ) for the low low prices, which isn't to hard to find anymore.

The mirror is worth 50 bucks, I just paid 70+ for a new one.

I'm told to get a OEM rubber gasket as their just better quality ? and I did when my glass was replaced. But I've never compaired the aftermarket to an OEM.

I have a 964 windshield in my '87.
You must use a 964 seal with 964 glass. There is about a 1/4" differance in the 911 to 964 glass size, and the correct seal make up the differance. It was a 15 minute job to swap. Use an OEM seal if possible. YMMV

I've also used a 946 window in an 87. In fact, my 89 came with actually a 964 window and trim from the factory. Must be the year they made the 964 window on the C4 and the Carrera interchangable. Straightforward installation as described in above post.

Thanks for the input guys.

Bob, I did go into the seedy underworld ( in daylight ) for the low low price. I went to LA Dismantlers in sun valley.

Factory manual indicates warnings about the change made around later 89 affecting late 3.2 production...with parts number differences including windshield and auxiliaries like rubber...
