Trailing arm upgrade...axle question...
I know this has been discussed a couple of times and I have searched the archives but did not come up with a definative answer....
I am upgrading my 1973 911T to have the later aluminum trailing arms off from a Carrera. I am aware of all the clearance issues with the shock and the heat exchanger. I have new Bilstein sports (also for a later car). I also have all the hardware and brake components to make this work. I have done this conversion before on my other car but I had *ALL* the parts needed from a donor Carrera, everything from the axle nut to the transmission itself so that conversion was easy. My question for the 1973 car is related to the axles... Will my old axles slide into the new trailing arms? If not, what parts do I need to complete this conversion. Do I need an entire Carrera axle assembly and if so, do I then need different stub axles going into the transmission? The reason I am doing this is because I am unable to get less than 2 degrees positve camber on my left rear wheel. I have exhausted all means to adjust it out. This leaves me to believe that the trailing arm might be bent. This does not make any sense because there was no previous damage to the car and the original wheels were perfect! I can't think of any other possible causes. Any thoughts here??? TIA, Chris

You may need to do something similar with your car -- or not since it is aready set up with a 915 transaxle.

Hello. I have just completed this job. Carrera suspension into a 70.
The early axles slide right into the carrera trailing arms. Make sure your CV bolts are not too long, or they may cause the scraping mentioned by John above. The shock clearance was sorted by bending the spot welded edge of the heat exchangers over with taps from a hammer. It was easy. Your camber issues could be caused be old tired bushings on the spring plates that have worn down to the point that they no longer hold the trailing arms straight. Mine were stuffed. Good luck. Stu W

Thanks Stu...I hope mine will work like yours did. Good advice on the bushings. I will look into that when I take it apart.
