911 vs Audi?
I work with a guy who says he will put up a stock Audi against any stock 911. I don't know anything about Audi, but I'm thinking this is going to be some easy money! Am I right?

Not necssarily easy but I'd go with the new 911. The Audi S4 and late model S6 were both fast with excellent handling. Twin turdo with 4 wheel drive. Maybe he means with 4 people on board plus golf bags.

I imagine in straight line a current S4 or RS6 would be a good match to a 911.
These same cars could probably lap pretty well too. They don't have as much upward potential as a 911 but then you're away from stock. I assume also that when you say "any stock 911" you aren't including turbo's, GT3's, GT2's.

What Audi versus what 911? An Audi S4 against a 911T? I think the S4 would win. An A4 against a 997? I think 997 would beat it. ;-)
Need some specifics here.

OK I have never driven an S4 or an 911 for that matter, and I have never been on a track. But my parents have a Boxter and an A4. In my humble and most honest opinion the Boxter would kill the A4 anywhere. Unless you were trying to pack 4 people and a golf bag. Not to knock the A4 it is a great car. I just don't "feel" like it could compete with a Boxter. But the above photo is pretty damaging to the porsche folk unless of course they are lapping it.

They may not look like much but a new S4 has 340hp 6spd(tip or man), great suspension and brakes. The old S4 wasn't much slower w/ twin turbos.
I have a very potent 911 for comparison, the Audis are fast S4 V8 S4 tt

I have an A4 turbo with go fast goodies, my neighbor has a S6...and I echo Amac's RS6 statement, the performance of all of the Audi model makes them...totally different animals from each other...so it depends on what model your co-worker is praising.
Any of the S lines are going to give many a run for their money...and yes, the Audi's do mod very well!

Funny, how it only took 20 some years for other car manufactures to catch up with Porsche.

How often do you see an Audi 5000 on the streets these days? Remember how they were the best selling German Import for years running? Now how often do you see a 911 from the mid 80s? My Dad who has had an Audi 90Quattro, an A4Q, and now one of those A6 based beefy wagons, says that Audis are great cars to have as long as they are under warrantee! Not the highest praise in my book.
So an S4 might have a hand up on my '76 today, but in another decade or two the S4 will be in the junk yard and my '76 will still be going strong (knock on wood.) That's how Porsche has won Le Mans more than any other manufacturer!

My wife drives either a stock White 1987 Carrera or a nicely modified Imola Yellow 2000 Audi S4 6-speed.
The S4's been upgraded with APR chip, downpipes, exhaust, H&R Ultra's, short shift, trans brace, snub mount and Stoptech front brakes (in stealth black). With around 340hp this car is smoking fast and stops on a dime, ABS She drives the S4 on the track and I have seen her walk away from WRX's, Boxter S's and even 996's. ECU upgrades alone on these newer turbos are amazing.

I have driven a new S4 (v8). Be careful if you want to race one. They are fast, with lots of torque in every gear.

Yes the S4 is fast, I would like to see what it would do up against a 993
I think any model Porsche after the 993 would do better....till you get the the RS6 then well..... Just a little fact; Audi built the engine in the best selling Porsche ever made 944.. I am not say the 944 was anygood,, just Porsche Sold a lot of them

audi rs6+ out accelerates the GT2 and F430. think about that next time an unassuming wagon pulls up next to you with grey anodized rims and racks. It will smoke you badly! cant get em in the us though. a slightly modded s4 tt is a very capable car and if you toss out the interior youve got a total sleeper. my ex gf had an 02 s4tt with clutch, flywheel, rs4 upgrade and some other goodies, that thing was a beast!

Obviously I love 911's and p-cars in general, but after driving a "slightly modified" 2000 S4 for a couple of years, I can fairly say that it would smoke "most" Porsches on street or track. As mentioned above, specifics are required to make any sort of valid comparison.
The S4 is heavy and fairly soft, but any time you combine a massive and flat torque curve with Quattro traction, it is not tough to comprehend why they've won so many rally and GT races over the last 20 years.

Hey both are great cars marques, but for different applications. When the snow flies, my urS6 Avant, snowboard, helmet and I head to the Mts for some slope analysis (like this weekend!). When it is hot and dry, my 911, my other helmet, my sticky tires and tools head to the track to do some asphalt speed analysis. I would rather be at the track in my 911 and conversely in the Colorado snow in my Audi Quattro. On boost in the mts, there are not many car marques on the road that can keep up with with the Audi S-cars though the stupid a** SUV drivers like to try. Get one of each and be happy with your fine choices. YMMV

More specifics needed.
If you look over the ur quattro figures they mare not a million miles from a contemporary 911 and the sport version was up above them all, but shadowed by the 959. Then came the S2 in coupe and Avant form, with a 0-60 in 5.9/6.0 secs and a max of 150mph they were for the years ( 1991-1995) pretty good. The RS2 was of course developed by Porsche for Audi and with 315hp, a 4.5 secs 0-60 with a maximum up arpiund 165-170 mph it was pretty much a match for the 993, so much so that certain Audi fans regard the lack of acoupe version as suspect, as perforamce wise it would have been too close to the 993 for comfort. After that the S4 was a disappointment, only 286 hp...yada yada yada, all corrected with the RS4 which was up in the 350 bracket..again pretty close to 996. Since then the RS6 and RS6+ have shown that it is possible to match perforamance with the size. Certainly my S2 wagon will beat my 911E but its no were near as much fun. Boxsters are easy meat, except the S. If I wanted to a quick ECU mod would see the S2 running 280hp with not other changes. If I delve into Intercooler, manifold and turbo upgrades then 350 is reasonable. Now that would bring a 4.5 0-60 time and a max of 160/170..just how far away would a 997 be. Not a million miles. As for reliability issues, being based on the 80 platform its thelast of the true German cars, after which they engineered to price as opposed to pricing the engineering....so its been very very good. Let down only by a failing battery, the original one oafter 8 years...... |
