I recently purchased a 1980SC, my first P-car, and would like some input from some veteran P-car owners. The car has a 1983 tea tray on it off of a turbo car I'm guessing and I have the opportunity to purchase an original 1980 tail, not the duck tail, at a reasonable price. It would need to be repainted, but it is in good condition. The car is not concours, but I'm thinking about getting it back to a more original look. Any feedback would be appreciated.

hi
personally i do not like the turbo tail on narrow bodies - i would swap the tails and sell the turbo one.

What do you want the car to look like?

I do like the look of the turbo tail, but I have no intention of making the car a wide body. I'm just wondering if the original look would be more desirable or if it's strictly personal preference.

The turbo tail is out of proportion with a narrow body car. The Turbo car has exaggerated lines so the tail fits the profile of the body.

Chris I would keep the turbo tail it makes a huge difference in cooling during the summer. Also at higher speeds the car will be more stable with a tail.
Most important post some pics of your car.

I agree w/ most of the guys that the turbo tail looks too big. If you can post some pics, that would give us a better idea.

Too big to fail

I'm grateful for any tail I get, but even for me a turbo tail is too much for a narrow-bodied car - BTDT. A ductail works nicely, or if you want the more aggressive look, a Carrera tail is acceptable.

Here are some pics. Steve hadn't considered the cooling aspect. I've only had it since September, so it hasn't seen the mid summer heat yet. It typically runs at 180 degrees. The A/c works very well.

That tail looks better than I thought it would (very 80s retro) but I think I personally prefer smaller versions. I don't think you have to worry about engine overheating in a stock 3.0 w/ a small tail, and rear downforce shouldn't be an issue @ any speeds you would attain w/ that engine.

If you're not racing it, a tail is only decoration.

Ditch the Turbo tail.
See your car with early carrera tail click on my signature. You can also do ducktail - like Mark's - check out his car.. Nice car (a bit biased, yes I am!)

A Carrera tail, a duck tail, or one of the early turbo tails (whale tale)
