Cult Oil??

Interesting reading post regarding brands of oil.

One in particular was labled as "Cult Oil" While I know the connotation, I'm curious as to why folks are putting Amsoil in this category.

At $8.50 per quart (20/50) and 25K oil change intervals, I'm not sure if there is a little "snake oil" in the promotion of the product.

Would anyone really run their car 25K before an oil change regardless of the type of oil used?

TIA

I think the term used was "Boutique" oil..can still be pretty good but has smaller scale availability and garners a high price.

Cult oil or snake oil would bring up other images....granted...

it's very common factory oil-interval on new cars using synthetic oils.

"Boutique" oil is a pretty accurate description I think. For instance in the Italian motorcycle world, the "Boutique" oil is AGIP. There are those that claimed that only this oil was right for the Ducati. Baloney....

I've used Mobil-1 in mine forever...

True, but they're not air/oil cooled engines.

Actually, in a Pcar with normal oil consumption of 1 qt. per 1.2K miles, the usage for 25K miles would be about 34 qts (including the 13 qt. initial oil change).

The question still remains, "would anyone contemplate 25K oil change intervals on a Pcar"?

Psychologically, I would be uneasy.

Thanks,

Boutique oils are marketing BS.
Stick with a well-known oil -- or Mobil 1 if applicable.

Don't waste money based on far out marketing logic -

I believe Amsoil was called "cult oil" in a recent thread due to the fact that it is a product of MLM "pyramid" marketing. Just like Amway, it is very cult-ish.

Yes, too bad the marketing approached the incredulous. I can see a PO saying that he/she has changed the oil every 25K miles because they run synthetic oil.

Most folks on this board change their oil. Using Dino, the cost is approx. $28.00. If done at the dealer or shop it's material plus labor (1 hr) so a dino oil change could run about $100.00+.

Using Syn. oil, DYI'ers cost would be about $70.00. At the dealer or shop, it would be approx $160.00.

If I were running the car in Arizona, Calif. or Texas in the summer, I would consider syn. because of heat dissipation, otherwise, dino is still fine in the NE.

If you don't operate in very cold weather.

I used to run RedLine in my track/street VTEC, then I learned about Mobil 1.... it was almost 1/2 the price. Granted, on a 2 liter 4 cyl you don't need a lot of oil, but I'm certain RedLine wasn't TWICE as good as Mobil 1.
