I've seen 5.6 and 5.3 reported.

Dave,

Take a look at this thread. It has the Car and Driver magazine test with 5.3.

You would have to do some serious abuse of a Carrera to get 5.3 out of it.

IIRC - my owners manual shows a graph with either 6.0 or 6.1 seconds.

Kurt B knows all about this. I really miss his 3.2 Cab smack-down stories.

I wonder if they were capable of this brand new in 84. My engine has 180k plus more so I doubt the car would keep to specs after that much wear and tear.

At 180k miles I'd think you're right. Another factor would be how the car was broken in.

Yup. Factory manual says 0-60 in 6.1 seconds. Seems a bit conservative though.

Car and Driver used to be notorious for brutalizing their test cars, frequently breaking/ blowing them up in the process. I don't doubt that they did 5.3, but the car was probably trashed when they were through with it.

Good point about Car and Driver having to really launch the 1984 Carrera 3.2 they tested to get a 5.3 second 0-60. Car and Driver thrashes on EVERY car they test to establish a 0-60 time. Therefore, that time IS valid "RELATIVE" to other cars C/D tests.

DAMN, 0-60 in 5.3 seconds back in 1984!!! The Carrera 3.2 really was ONE BAD MF when it came out!

Eh - I've read so many reviews of the 3.2. I've seen 0-60 between 5.1 all the way to 6.7. It's just a matter of how much you want to destroy your car, I guess. I'd keep my car living and just say "...under 10 seconds."

It's pretty much every magazine. I have worked with them all. I had my personal '95 Jetta VR6 thrashed for a Motor Trend feature back in '98 at Camarillo Airport. The bigger the publication, the less they care.

They must have done at least 15 0-60 runs with the car, trying to improve on the 6.4 seconds they got with it. I had to put in a new clutch, rotors, brake pads and tires after the test day was over. Fortunately, the tires were free.

Worst part was having to limp it home from Ventura County all the way back to South O.C.

Wonder what an '88 Carrera with a 3.5L twin-plug motor will do 0-60 in???

Ralph

Depending upon the magazine, I've seen everything between 5.2 and 6.1, but the most common numbers seem to run between 5.6 and 5.8, so I would consider them mid to high 5 cars.

I know mine will hit mid sixties in 2nd before redlining. Here...on page 111 of my owner's manual is a transmission diagram; it says the RPMs at 60 MPH in 2nd gear are around 5700.
