Who sais 915s can't take it .......(pic)

Ha!
Just thought I'd share one of my rare torture tests for the 915. This is off my concrete launch pad. She takes a lickin' putting the beat down on the 345s.

Nice....but you broke the rear sway bar mounts, overtorqued the driveshafts and bent the pinion shaft. Nice going.

A 2-ft scratch? I'd be a little embarrassed about that

That 2 foot scratch was made by launching at idle speed (1000rpm) off boost. What the photo does not show is the "haze" mark for the next 10 feet that gets darker as the boost hits.
First gear doesn't last 2 seconds in this car. The tires put down another 20 foot "haze" in second gear to 65mph.
No, I didn't break anything. As stated in the first post I don't do this sort of thing every day. You do need to occasionally practice launching for auto-x. It is tricky to leave quickly without getting on boost so fast as to loose control or smoke the tires and over-rev the engine. I also need to know the car's limitations. So far I've been impressed.

Rarly--you know I was just busting your ba(*s! I can't even imagine what its like driving a car like yours and having the tires break loose every time boost comes on stong.

What? Humor? On THIS forum?
Ya I figured that. Not so sure 'bout the fella above you though. These type posts are juvenile in nature, grown men don't take pictures of burnouts you know. I expect some will get their nose bent. That's not my problem. I'm having fun with my car and sharing it with the gang. If it breaks I'll fix it. Beats just having garage jewelry or a parade car.
Now where is that burnout video..............

I wonder if 915 pinion gears dislike this as much as 901s?

I agree. Drive it like a race car. Fix it when something breaks. It's always a good excuse for an upgrade as well.

This is a good way to find out what kind of differential you have if you're unsure. Rev the motor to 5000rpm or so, drop the clutch, and observer the tire patterns on the ground:

1 stripe - open diff
2 stripes - limited slip diff
0 stripes - time to upgrade to a new limited slip diff

Oh yeah. Post the video. Most of us here are kids anyway. It's just our toys are a little more expensive.......

The 901 is different than the 915 in a few ways:
it is lighter, the intermediate plate is not as ridgid, the 1st gear cantilever is weaker, and the output shaft is more flimsy (see intermediate plate) which allows it to climb the ring gear under extreme load.

The picture shown of ther 901 pinion gear looks to me like it climbed the ring gear and lost proper mesh due to the case flexing, the intermediate plate flexing, and the shaft itself flexing.
915s can do this too, but it takes a whole bunch more torque to do it.

I used to leave 25 foot black marks with the 901 (in second, never 1st) but that in a mid-engined car and quite a bit more torque
I'ver never tried to launch hard in the 911, I'm afraid of missing the point slightly and frying the cluch if the boost came on before I had it fully engaged.

Rarely, What kind of clutch are you running and have you had any slippage problems with it? Thanks.

RarlyL8 I always enjoy your posts! I burned the hides the other day ,I was waiting my turn to get on the highway behind a minivan. as they pulled out I pulled out about 40 feet behind hit the gas in 1st and peged the tach at 8k!. I have a 2.8 L Ecam ported 9.5cr in a77 911. I was still getting used to the new HP and was pleasantly cought off gard as I dont really do burnouts that often. But compaired to the old 2.7 wich could not do that ,it was really fun!

Damned internet. You can't see folks expressions to know if they're yankin' ya.

Well here's the story. The 915 is bone stock and was rebuilt during the motor swap. The clutch is a Sachs Sport unit. I really really like it. It is not heavy does not chatter and is not on/off. My crappy odometer broke just before the motor swap so I can only guess that the combo has at least 10,000 miles on it. I figured on only getting 20,000mi out of the 915.
My driving habbits are conservative because of the 915 weak link. I never launch or shift on boost. This slows the car down and makes it a less fun toy. The motor is also restrained. After the (don't) break-in period the throttle was adjusted to only open 4/5 and the wastegate spring was reduced to 0.7 bar. The car was going to kill me. It lit up the tires one cold day while exiting an on ramp in 3rd gear. Sideways at 90mph leaves stains. The car still performs on-boost 1st and 2nd gear tire frying feats with these restraints. Needless to say I've been talking to a mechanic buddy about the cost of proper upgrades for the 915.
If you want to make your near stock 930 an absolute handfull just add a low gear 5spd.
In the meantime I need to know how to download VHF onto my computer. What hardware and software is needed? I have a DVD burner and a VCR player. Anybody wanna see me and an insane buddy doing burnouts and running 175mph ?

Hee hee Rarly, I'm on my second 915 in the 930 powered 911S so far. Of course the original had 189K miles on it before it gave up, so that's not bad. I figure we need to consider them "wear items" like the clutch and brake pads. Carry on.

My 87 does not have a limited slip and I can lay down a lot better 2 stripe pattern than that.

I like abuse and so does my car.

Sure why not - I can get the video to a DVD or a hostable size but I don't have any place to host it. What kind of video card do you have? You basically need to put your VCR output to a video card input on your computer and record. I have the ATI recording software that came with my computer. Let me know if you need help.
