Power window switch problem from a newbie

Hello all,

(’81 911SC) My passenger window got stuck half way open. This morning I was warming her up and I wanted to crack my window down. Not realizing, I hit the passenger window switch. I hit the switch again to stop it. But now it won’t go up or down. No luck either w/ the passenger side switch. Driver’s window switch was still working fine. I messed with it some more but no luck. I did notice that this switch has a bit more play in it than the others. I turned car off and waited a few seconds to see if would reset itself. Turned the car back on and now all switches don’t work. All was fine last night. Any suggestion on how to approach this? Bad switch? Fuse? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You can check the motor fuse which I think is the second one closest to the dash (25 amp). If this doesn't work you can try moving one of the switches to the passenger side and see if that works. Also, if the wiring is bad or shorting on the drivers side it will take out the function of the passenger switch. The switches run about $25 ea. so you might consider replacing the three. HTH

I'll check the fuse 1st, then I'll pull the switch out. Should I disconnect the battery before messing with these switches? Do you really think that if one switch goes bad, that the other two get fried also? Thanks for any info.

You might want to dissconnect the battery first. I just pulled the connectors on the switch one by one and covered the tips with electrical tape. Make sure you write down the placement of the wires. You don't necessarily
fry the other switches it's just that the power to the motor goes in sucession starting from the driver window switch. If there is any interruption the passenger window isn't getting power.
