Question Shipping a Porsche engine

UPS tells me that they don't ship engines. Who does? Any E-mail address or 800-number is appreciated, thanks.

My engine is being shipped with Roadway, as we speak. $203 from SF to LA. Their number is 800-762-3929.

Yellow Freight is good, too.

I just don't know if these two ship from B.C.

Oh yeah, put the engine on a pallet, and wrap it good with shrink wrap. They don't like any loose ends hanging out.

If going any distance, I recommend using "Forward Air"

Check out Forward Air. They only ship terminal to terminal (airport to airport), but they are fast and cheap. My wife runs a yoga mat import business, and to ship two pallets of yoga mats (1200 lbs) from Seattle to NYC, they quoted $370. I have used them to ship a motorcycle and a foosball table. Very satisfied.

Forward Air just lost an engine I had shipped from SFO to JFK. Let's see how they handle this claim...

I used both Southeastern Freight lines and UF Dugan and was very happy with both and they were under $300

Just make sure you pay the extra for insurance in case of damage or loss. If you don't they only cover about $1.50 to $5.00 per pound. Crate it if you can and mark it not to be top loaded.

I have found that shipping by air from airport to airport is both fast and relatively inexpensive. Just make sure that all fluids are drained, preferably several days before shipping, and that the engine is then well wrapped, on a pallet and even in a plywood box. It's a bit of trouble, but I found that it was worth it.

Airlines may consider that engines are "dangerous" cargo and will want to take extra care. It's also common sense not to do anything that will endanger an aircraft. So drain everything and make sure there is not the slightest smell of gas or oil.

There is a difference between shippers: Not the cost, but the options. From LA to Spokane, WA
Fedex will only ship from a business terminal, crated engine, 350 lbs, insured for 50 cents/lb. Shipping cost: $200.00. C.O.D. option.
Roadway will ship from private residence or their terminal, crated, No insurance possible. Cost: $215.00. C.O.D. option.
Forward Air: Only Airport to Airport. LAX to Seattle About $200.00. Insurance possible. No C.O.D.
UPS is not really interested in shipping engines. Roadway was by far the easiest, and friendliest, to deal with. Too bad that they don't let you insure for loss, or damage. Hmm, Rats!

Gunter,

I run a Medical distribution company for a living and I can assure you that Roadway does allow you to add insurance, at a cost, for any shipment they handle. They don't like to admit it as they don't like to pay claims as they claims ratio is so high. Roadway here in the US is probably one of the worst companies to use as they give poor service across the board and mislead customers about what is available in the way of insurance and in filing and paying claims. Fed Ex does have a Freight Service here in the US and in Canada but it is handled as a separate company called FedEx Freight. UPS also has this type service under their Supply Chain Solutions group, again a separate company. There may be some restrictions/additional fees if the shipment is going residence to residence though. DHL/Danzas also can handle this type of shipment. I've used them for a transmission going from FLA to Va for a cost of about $180. Yellow Freight here in the US will also handle the shipment as I have used them to ship from CA to VA. I think the cost was about $380 with insurance. Big issue is palletize the freight and crate it if possible. Label it not to top load the shipment. Ship it as a used engine classification and insure it properly. It's more expensive but believe me if you have a damage or loss, which is very possible, then it's more than worth the money.

Yellow frieght

HI,
I've shipped two 911 engines via Yellow freight.
Call the 800 number, they will walk you throught it,
tell them you want the Yellow discount (they should give it to you).
They have a special class set up for engines, you need to provide the weight, and PUT IT ON A PALLET with plywood sides and top.
Not only does it protect the engine, but the freight rate is lower.
You can save some money if the engine is dropped off and picked up at their local terminal in your area.
You just need a pickup truck, and they will load it in!

Bad part is that I guessed the weight of a 911 engine at 300 lbs, when I got it they weighed it at 550 (including pallet, and sides).
Cost from New Mexico to Milwaukee $350.

For reference this was a complete motor with heat exchangers/ muffler and CIS (no flywheel or clutch).

Hope this helps, I have to say that Yellow freight makes it very easy, especially if you can drop and pick it.

Best of luck

Jeff

My 2.7 was shipped from San Diego to Anchorage, Ak, for 750.00, via Lynden Air Frieght. I used Chandler Packaging to build a special pallet that supported the engine and protected the Webers for 250.00. I know this is a little spendy but it was well worth it. They are excellent company's to deal with.

Thanks, All: I had a feeling that my estimate of 350lbs. was low. Can someone else confirm that the weight is more like 500+lbs.? It will add to the cost. My idea of a straight deal is an honest description of the engine and shipping with insurance and C.O.D. That way, the seller is motivated to send the engine asap properly crated, etc. I'll contact Yellow Freight and see.

My 2.7 with Webers and the pallet if I recall came in at around 370lbs. That's without the SSI's. One other thing, the fuel and oil must be removed from the engine.

Figure on 400 lbs w/o exhaust, strapped to a pallet & wrapped. There must be absolutely no fluids dripping out.

Forward Air will not provide full value insurance unless it is fully crated, which costs about $100-$150 here in Mass & adds about 75-100 lbs to the total weight.

I just rec'd a motor palletized & wrapped (not crated), weighing 400 lbs, shipped thru FA from Dallas to Boston for $155. It was terminal to terminal, no insurance. If they loose it, I am out of luck. Crating is the safest way.

We sell servicable, rebuildable 3.0 long block engines for $3,500 & up.

Many of the trade-in engines we get are leakers and have broken or pulled studs. Most often they turn over fine, the cranks are std & they simply need a teardown & freshening up.

The cores have value, as the crank & rods & heads are worth a bit themselves. Sometimes combining (2) or more core motors will provide enough parts to rebuild one.

Ck our web site or call us. Its toll free from Canada.
