Shipping large / heavy items: Options

So far I've seen Greyhound and forward air as two possible options for large heavy objects...like a trans for instance. Yes there's common carrier but that tends to be much more expensive and terminal location and pickup may be less than appealing.

I was looking at a piece of relatively heavy machinery and the seller mentioned Fedex as an option. After some investigation I found that there's FEDEX Freight. I never knew this.

Pick-up / drop-off locations seem to be convenient and the they offer 1-2 day delivery. This service caters to Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) and >150 pounds.

Has anyone used this service? If so some feedback would be appreciated.

Check your local truck freight companies. I know that they have a reduced rate for shipping 'Core-return parts'......like half cost. Just tell them you need to ship a core trans case. You'll be suprised how cheap it is.

I bought a rare 400 Chevy block from a guy in Nevada. I live in Va. The cost was $72.00 because he shipped it as a core.

I just received a tail I bought from German Auto dismantlers in Georgia. Cost me $100 but it came well packed in a large wooded crate. Delivered right to my office by Fed Ex freight.

Good to know about the core shipping angle. That must be why my BMW trans was relatively inexpensive to ship.
A trans is one example....but for other heavy and large items common carrier is not inexpensive or particularly convienient.

I ship transmissions all day long via FedUP Ground...just sent one to AZ from MI and had a 2.2 crank sent along for the ride...total cost was $65.16 plus my materials.

Complete engines are sent out vis R&L Carriers, shrink wrapped and palleted, from MI to FL for $153.81. The upper east coast increases the cost by a huge amount due to the tolls and such.

Amtrak Express will take up to 500 pounds if you put it on a pallet.

I use FedEx Ground Service all the time, in my business and selling P-car parts. Just shipped a Carrera tail a couple of weeks ago - St. Louis to NJ was only $13.30, got there in two days. I think their service and rates can't be beat.

For heavy stuff, try Forward Air....received a 993 shortblock that way. Relatively cheap and they lifted it onto my truck bed.

For the record, what is the weight limitation for Forward Air? I can't find on their website.

I like Amtrak when both parties have a station nearby.
