Extreme Makeover 911 Edition

Hey Gents!

Just had to share the results of the interior updating and detailing I did to my '74 911 this week:

BEFORE:

AFTER:

BEFORE:

AFTER:

Updates:

RS America style door panels in black leather
Momo Prototipo brushed aluminum spoke steering wheel
15mm spacer on Momo wheel
Porsche crest horn button
Billet aluminum shift knob with 915 shift pattern engraved on top
Black w/red polka-dots coco mats

A dashpad replacment with a clean used one is planned for the near future to get rid of that padded vinyl covered one that's in there.

Really freshened-up an otherwise tired interior, don't you agree?

Nice improvement.

What is the thing on the floor to the right of the shifter?

Paul, that's what us people up in Seattle call a latte (cup) holder!

Thanks for the "thumbs-up" on the changes!

It takes 3 shots of espresso to budge my "charm-meter" in the morning and 2 shots as a "chemical siesta" about 3 PM... that's not an addiction, is it?

Hey, just to make sure you understand my priorities, here's where I started on this 911:

Aw shucks! Ain't nothing someone with a can of Gunk foaming engine cleaner, some plastic and steel bristle parts cleaning brushes, scaulding hot water, ScotchBrite pads, a Dremel tool and some Dupli-Color 500º rated clear engine paint couldn't do. It took all of about 3 hours to detail that engine!

A new heater hose and a set of engine decals are about the only thing that cost anything, about $50 total.

I rather like the look the fan and housing when it's been polished-up using a steel brush, ScotchBrite pads, and a Dremel tool with a couple fine sanding heads. A coat of high temperature clear protects the metal from corroding again. The remnants of the gold anodized coating came off very easily.

Someday when the engine is out, I'll go back and really give it the treatment, but for now it's a big improvement.

You've got a great stable there. The VW and the 914 look fantastic. I especially like the 914 which I'm normally not a big fan of but you did yours really nice. I don't care much for "Carrera" decals on the side of 911's but the side decals really work on the 914.

Thanks for the "thumbs-up" on my car collection and the 914 Bob! I restored that one from a total rust bucket back in 1993. Here's its story if you're interested: Darryl's 914 project

That Momo horn button with the Porsche crest has been sitting unopened in a drawer for about 10 years. I bought one for my 914 project about that same time and when I heard that Porsche was not going to allow Momo to make anymore, I bought one and put it away for my future 911 project.

I'm actually considering a thin negative 2" wide Porsche stripe for the 911 to go along with the rally car theme. I played with Photoshop to see what a set would look like:

I've already added the H4 headlights with the black rims and am considering adding a pair of black '74 style mirrors. The driver's side mirror is currently painted to match the car.

What I really love about this '74 is the total lack of any gizmos; no power mirrors or windows, AC, power steering, power brakes, etc. Back in the good old days, when Porsches were like a Karmann Ghia on steroids!

Hey Mike!

This is another one of those Porsche trademark infringment deals, you used to be able to order these stripes from any major vendor but now its hard to find them. I've already got a set of the thin ones, what I'm really looking for are the fat ones like on my 914. I'd like to have a replacement set tucked-away in case I kiss a guard rail with the 914 someday. I found the thin ones via Google thinking I was ordering fat ones. You wouldn't happen to have fat ones would you?

An addiction is by definition a habitual type thing....So 3 in the morning and then two more at precisely "3pm"......um.........

Of course, someone could say anyone who polishes their cooling fan and airbox has an addiction type personality....Not that I would know or anything like that
