How do I take dust caps off.
I have an easy question, how do I take off the bearing dust caps without banging or tearing them up.

Believe it or not I used a small ball hammer and tapped around the edges and it works itself right off, and no dents. I think wrenches ect. would really tear it up.

Mine had little threaded nipples on the tops. I put a bolt in there and mechanically backed them out.

Too big to fail

The 930's are threaded because the hubs are deeper. Here's how I used to do it before I converted to 930 brakes:

Tap it with a wood or plastic mallet, should come right off. Tim is right, wrenches would most marr them.

put a 2" exhaust clamp in the groove and then pry on the clamp.

This is another one of those threads that keeps coming back like, well, one of those threads.
Maybe when someone first signs up on the board, they get emailed a FAQ containing links to dust caps, E-Rams, 'which oil is best' and stuff like that.

Irrationally exuberant

I tap around the cap and it "walks" right out. I use an 8" piece of 2x4 applied to the cap and tap the other end with a big hammer.
Avoid using a metallic hammer on the cap itself - it's very easy to hit a stud that way and wreck the threads. -Chris

Threaded caps for the Turbo, FYI.
They were not that easy to get off! ![]()

Two hammers with claws. Stick the claws from one hammer under the lip of the dust cap. Strike the head with the head of the other hammer. Work yourself around until it starts coming off. I have found that this does not mar the dust cap - And mine were on tight tight tight!

Everytime I see one of those posts. It makes me chuckle. Should add a how to use the search function with that FAQ starter e-mail. I would save some of the new folks from getting blasted. irl, don't take offense. Just part of getting your feet wet. I still think the dust cap removal is the #1 first question. You'll be chuckling too, in a couple years. Good Luck ![]() ![]()

It's SOOOO easy, just "gently pry off bearing cap" as instructed in Bently. Yea, right. I had to use channel locks, like pictured above, and tapped the channel locks with a ball peen hammer. I don't think it was ever removed previously. Mine's a little scratched up now, but it did come off.
Good luck!

Thanks for all the suggestions, and I will use the search function next time. I think I have found the best solution myself. A small pair of welding C clamps attaches very nicely and does not scratch or ding the cap. They just wiggled off with some effort. Hopefully you do not have to own a pair of these, but if you do, they work awesome. Thanks again

It's a trap...

Aloha - it took me some time to find the search function. Maybe the letters could be bigger, or it could be moved to the top of the page? I find it most useful now that I have found it.
Cheers, Mike (very junior member)

I know of a case where we broke a slide hammer (!) and the d%mn thing still didn't come off a turbo ( the one with the threaded center) !!!!

With a little concentrated heat at the interference lip while turning the hub it should lossen up a little more.
Or bounce the suspension with the channel locks lol. Either will work. Just go slow and even.
