911 Mid-Rise Scissor Lifts..who's got'em ?

My wife and I are moving into a new house, and luckily we have time to do some painting and work before we move in.

One of the things that I will be applying is a 3 to 1 Epoxy Coating (btw, if anyone is interested, this stuff is tough as nails; $50/gallon~250 sq.ft).

My question is about Mid-Rise Scissor lifts, in the 48" range.
I would love to see some owner's examples, and hear from anyone with any first hand experience with the residential grade mid-rise scissor lifts.

I know that this is NOT a 2-post lift...but I would like to know from those that use this lift, do you find it to have helped with working on your car? Both topside, and bottom side? Does the overall lift enable you to drop your P-Car motor effectively?

Thanks,

C2

Here are some examples that I have found so far:

Lift to 52" $1295.00

Lift to 39" $899.99

Lift to 59.1" $1299.99

Lift to 26" $1399.99

Cool

I think Souk has one.

Harbor Freight Sales I think. He says that its a copy of the Snap-On product.

I think its probably the same one from the same mfg.

not my pic.
Mine is a bit below ground to allow a somewhat level floor. Bill Verburg has the same model with 2 pistons. Souk's HF is about $1,200 new. The Snap-On is about $1,200 used.

do a search for tons of info

Is there enough under carriage clearance to allow for the lift to sit on the floor, and the car to pull in over it? Or is it necessary to either sink the lift into the floor, or have 2X material to drive up onto for clearance.....I thought that I read in the specifications that the overall height when closed was less than 4 inches......

Thanks for everyone's insight, as usual, it is very helpful.

street height 911s need a 1.5" lift(I use a 2x12) to drive over, a race height 911 needs a 3"(I use 2x 2x12 stacked) lift to drive over.

Mine sits on .25" aluminum plate at the 3 ground points

Normally I keep the 2x 2x12s next to each other, only stacking them when needed. This makes driving over a bit less critical in re placement.

A recess would certainly be preferable, next garage will have that

Hmmm, now my thought is moving towards having a recess cut into the floor, but I don't think that would be cost effective....

I hope to start saving my pennies so that I can add onto my 2 car garage in the next few years, with the addition of 2 wide, 2 more cars deep. Then I will recess the mid-rise lift into a spot, and hopefully add a 2 post lift.

Isn't it nice to dream....

I've got the HF Chinese copy of the Snap-on. It's a good copy and I can sit under the car...

It's currently priced at $899 delivered to your door...

I would put a steal plate under it, kinda like what Bill did. Especially if you have coated your floor. The epoxy will not with stand it. I move my lift around now and then, so I just let it sit on the concrete.

Bill,
Do you think you need to have reinforced concrete floor to prevent cracks (or even accidents) ?

I've been reading on some other threads where some extra think concrete is recomended...

Currently we're building a house and based on the specs the garage slab will have:
4" Duramix concrete with rebar 24" o.c. over 6" gravel base

I don't know if that is enough...

Oracle, I am pretty sure my builder only spec'd 4" concrete. No cracks...the only marks are on the surface where the wheels roll back and forth during rising and lowering with the car on it. I've had my Jeep Cherokee on the lift and it was uneventful...Bill's metal plates are good to prevent marking the surface. Unless the concrete was placed incorrectly or has voids, a standard 4" should be fine, but then adding 1-2 more inches during construction is not that much more $$$.

Souk,

I noticed that your lift is blue, but the $899 lift on the HF website is colored grey. Can you confirm to me which of the above links is to your lift?

Thanks
chris

I have the first HF link, the $899 version. The gray picture is the same one that was use when I bought mine. It's actually a 120 VAC powered pump...I don't know why they don't fix this error. Make sure to quiz them on that. They may have fixed the pump instead of the AD!!!!

yep.. those plates are very nice.. and wise.

I did a below ground, concrete, birdcage, tub over a big work distance for entertainment.. I used long steel sheet.
I can jack or slide the lift anywhere.. it also has a 1inx3/4 edge/ plywood for a 4pc top cover that rests on the lift for strength. It also has 1 large drain at each end big enough to swallow 50gal of gas. And it's a wham bang to use.

I used over 2yds on one big pour & 3 small ones... lol

oh yeah..
the pic is the optional Snap-On rubber lift pads. they'll work with any lift arm. They are real nice to have.

it's cheap entertainment imo.. and you can sell the lift and fill the hole.

Yes, thats why a recess is out of the question in my case, I spec'd a very stron reiforced floor, there s too much rebar to economicly cut it up.

The aluminum plates are just to prevent superficial gouging of the surface, I used it w/o for a while and no issues but we had some hull plate left over from the last boat we built and the price was right.

ohh, the reason I didn't even look at the HF version was their ad which specs a 220v pump, apparantly an error on their part.

I have one of these:

From this company:
http://www.hydra-lift.com/

I removed the standard lifting pads.
At the front the cross-bar lines up perfectly with the front lifting points - I made up some wooden spacers with 1/2" of urethane on one side and a magnet on the other to hold them in place.

At the other end, I replace the standard swing plates with two that nicely reach the lifting points; I made up similar spacer blocks.
With these simple changes, which have no affect on the safety or operation, I can drive my lowered car (24 3/4" at the front) over the hoist, without risers. or sinking the lift into the floor.

When/if I want to lift one of my other (heavier) cars, I can bolt the standards lifting arm on in about 10 minutes.

As far as your other questions, I had some doubts about whether I could justify the expense. However, is is probably the most useful thing I have put in my garage. Makes prep for track days a breeze, if you are feeling really lazy, you can lift the car to make polishing the lower areas easier, etc. etc.
I have found that the scissors design has little impact on accessing a 911. Al least on my lift, the motor/gearbox is completely clear with the lift fully raised.

Hi Bob,
How much did you pay for that one? I just called and the sales manager is not in until Monday...
I'm interested cause it's in Toronto so I don't have to pay duties (I'm in Calgary)

Thanks
