well, after installing and lining up a new pair of H4s, i managed to create TWO annoying problems within about 2 minutes.
first, when screwing back in the the screw that holds the headlamp ring in place, my hand just gently tapped the periscope washer unit and broke it off! THEN, if that wasn't stupid enough...i knew i would have to replace that, so i wanted to test the washer system to see if it worked or not (to merit upgrading to the flush squirters) and after a few attempts i hear some trickling and yup, i burst some line or hopefully something just came loose, but about a gallon of windshield washer fluid started spewing out by my front AC condenser!! is this something that is easy enough to fix myself? should i replace both nozzels with the smaller ones? (since the other one might break off in the future) and most inportantly, does anyone know what the usual cause of a blockage in the system is? the motor winds up and definitely provides preasure since it most likely blew a hose off it's connecter. could it be clogged nozzels? arg this is so annying cause i don't even CARE about headlamp washers....who needs those in california anyways!! i would take them off and throw them away, but then i would have giant holes in my bumper. ![]() p.s. my windshield washers don't work either...

You probably cracked a line at the washer pump
(BTW, thats an AC condensor, not an oil cooler) ![]() AFJuvat

The DIY repair world is a slippery slope, as I'm discovering. Beware.

You can buy the headlight and windshield washer check valves (they get clogged) from Pelican. Their purpose is to hold fluid in the lines so that you don't have to wait a long time for fluid

Headlight Washer Replacement Tips
Both of mine were broken off when I bought my car. A necessary evil to replace.
Some tips I wrote up: PITA Job 2 (Cont): Headlight Sprayer Repare Tips Once I replaced them and had the system working I found that they get spray all over the hood and fenders in addition to the headlights. Nothing like accidentally hitting them just after cleaning the car, water spots all over the place. Good luck, Gordo

well i think you guys are right...here is what i found under the hood...looks like this was and L check valve and it blew open. If this one blew open, does that mean that up to there, the other T valves should be ok? there is quite a mess of rubber tubes down there. also which way is the fluid flowing? out of the big one into the smaller one??
also...i found this rubber clip sitting underneath the hose busted hose...anyone know what it's purpose was?

That rubber band is to hold the jack.
The large tube comes from the high pressure pump. I don't think that periscope is broken, rather the clip is missing. If you upgrade to flush washers, I'd love to get your periscopes. I kid you not. |

here is a pic of the underside of the nozzle. there is a sharp uneven edge that it has broken on, from what i can see.

you're right, that one is broken. Didn't pay attention. They are IMO one of the smaller very defining mid-70's details of the 911. One of the few details that survived the lightweight plan on my own car. I wonder. looking again at the picture of the tubing with the broken plastic inside your trunk, if the large bore tube you hold in your hand comes from the hi-press pump itself (on the right of the windshield washer pump in the pic)? That would mean the hi-press pump has a broken fitting. Last edited by GeorgeK; 11-30-2004 at 02:10 AM.. |

Tristan,
you have no idea....those headlamp washers are such a important and integral part of....of....uhh....ok i guess i'm just a loser however, thanks to those that want to buy my periscopes, but does anyone know HOW to get at these things to reinstall?? i want to do it myself and will probably order the smaller ones. If anyone wants to buy the periscopes, i will sell them, and the broken one you could probably superglue back together....possibly.

jfw,
there are clips that hold the washer on the bumper. You can access them from underneath if you are flexible, or else remove the bumper. Seeing from your pics, a complete assessment and repair/replacement seems in order, as quite a few parts seem to be broken. And YES they are an integral part of the 70's 911
