Another starter question?

On five or six occasions over the last 6 months I have turned the ignition key and all I get is a loud hum. Tried the key several times and still no ignition but I still have a good humming sound. Depending on my patience, next time I turn the key it either fires right up or I walk away for a bit and it fires up on my return.

I had thought I had either a loose ground (new ground strap 9 months ago) or a short in the fog lights draining the battery when I parked (seemed to occur when I had used the fogs and left the switch on) but last couple of times...nothing was on when i shut the car off.

Ideas? Starter is just over 200,0000 miles with a new, high out put, Optima battery.

thanks
Dane

Does your car have an aftermarket alarm by chance?? I have had this problem on 2 911s and a 928s4, all related to a buggered install of an alarm with a engine disable feature.

By the way, what front bumper are you going to put on your car?!?!?

Cheers, Jeff

Dane,

With "only" 2 million miles on the starter I might think that its done its duty!

Assuming that it does not have this many miles on it my next guess would be that either the contact inside the starter switch is not making contact or the solenoid wire on the starter may be loose.

what I'll sometimes do with the no-start prob is turn the key to "start" for about 10sec.. then run around and check battery connections, starter connections, sol case, etc. if I find heat I found the prob.
