Well cheer up, I have heard of it and seen it in sigs on posts!!!!!!!! I just wasn't excactly sure what the whole story was!! That would be the path that I would take, more power, less weight and slightly more pretty with a long hood. What are you going to use for 3.4 pistons and cylinders??
I am leaning towards JE.

Thanks, Jeff

MotoSook 12-02-2004 01:23 PM

I'm going with JE pistons, with bored and replated barrels by a reknown engine company that has a fair reputation :) ...that's all I can say for now.

Jeff,

Backdated my '85 model and love it! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/188463-85-backdate-72rs-3-6-proceeding-nicely.html

One thing to throw into the decision factor is that you live in an area where rust happens a lot easier than where I live. Getting a early car is a good idea but a later car and its zinc coated bodywork really helps when worried about rust.

This is the major factor as to why I backdated my car.... also I have owned it for a long time, know it very well and ITS PAID FOR! :)

Joe thanks for the link.

Yep, and Joe's car looks the business! So I would also vote for the backdate, but would seriously consider going with wider flares (`73 RSR clone).

ZAMIRZ 12-02-2004 05:00 PM

Car looks great as it is, I wouldn't change a thing except for maybe some window tint and possibly aero or 935 style mirrors.

Jeff Alton 12-02-2004 06:19 PM

Souk, how does the new front and reat bumpers attatch. Are they only fastened to the fenders?
Eric, larger rear flairs might require a bit more ambition than I have at the moment. I won't rule it out though.

Thanks, Jeff

I too say leave it alone!!! Sounds like you already made the car the way you intended it to be. Trends come and go but originality always remains! remember that old saying, "the grass is always greener on the other side". I thought about backdating my 74 911s but decided against it when I did step back to look at the beauty of the middle year 911's. I'm sure not everyone shares my opinion though. :D I decided to go with either arrows or mexico blue. My car currenly wears SC flares and a ducktail. If you do anything to it go with the IROC look. Seen it with the ducktail and it looks great!

Your car is very beautiful as is. I'll bet in 10 years or so you'll be dead tired of looking at the long hood and want the look you currently have.

Jeff Alton 12-02-2004 07:51 PM

Hmmm good points. I just like to have something a little different. What about 74 RSR look. big fenders and short hood??

Jeff

poorsha 12-02-2004 08:04 PM

"74 RSR look"
Now your talking Jeff.
Sell/trade me your car for my 74 and you will have a great basis for a 74 RSR :)

RSBob 12-02-2004 09:02 PM

Where are the $#$% voting buttons? Back date that puppy. It will keep you busy for months and you will have the best of both worlds.

Jeff Alton 12-02-2004 09:05 PM

I have never tried doing a pole on this BBS. Lets see if I can make it work.

What about color. Leave it Pacific Blue or change it?? If I leave it blue, what color graphics and wheels??

You guys are great at helping me spend my money. Ha Ha

Thanks, Jeff

just curious, why does everyone (most) want to suggest a backdate? I say if you want to change it, change it to the same look of it's era, IROC

It's a Carrera, for crying out loud. Now make it look like the baddest Carrera you can.

Something like......

Jeff,

I mount my front bumper using three bolts...that's it. I fabricated an aluminum adapter-flange that spans the front of the tub. The adapter is bolted to the FG bumper, and there is a single bolt that pulls the adaptor to the center of the tub in the front. The other two bolts are on the trailing edge of the bumper, near the wheel. It's solid as can be, and I can mount/dismount in less than 10 minutes.

The rear bumper mounting is similar. I made an adapter for it too that spans the area where I cut out the reflector mounting tin. Again, three bolts and less than 10 minutes of work to mount/dismount. Great for working on stuff when you are trackside or where ever.

You can now get a rear bumper that does not require cutting out the reflector mounting tin. There are ways to get around cutting one way or another...I wouldn't let that scare you.

Get FG fenders, hood and bumpers (rear as mentioned above) ..save your stock parts, and the conversion is reversible. You have flares already, so making an RS clone will be much simplier than what I did.

You will shed a lot of weight and if you get tapped at the track, no big deal, just fix the cracked f-glass or get a new piece (much cheaper then a steel replacement fender!).

You can do the backdate in a weekend, minus paint and waiting for the parts to come. It's simple!

Joeaksa 12-03-2004 07:44 AM

Souk,

Do you have any photos of the front and rear mounting? My front is mounted but still need to mount my rear bumper and the more ideas the better.

Jeff,

If I were going to retain the "short hood" of the car I would go with the one piece bumper like the yellow car above. MikeZ has this type of bumper and likes it. Really do not like the bellows and look of the impact bumper, and as well it does very little unless you are moving less than 3 mph and hit something square on. Like Souk says, either fix the 'glass or buy a new piece, its much cheaper.

Personally I like the early style look. Yes its a later model car but only someone who really knows 911's will know this and I get to enjoy the best of both worlds!

Joe,

I'm moving the Bastard into my garage this weekend to start winter work on it. I'll snap some pictures for you.

On the early-longhood look. It's a personal preference...you either like the classic look or you don't. I (and others who have backdated) like the classic look on a newer chassis with a more modern feel and modern comforts (not in my case :) ). Consider it a quasi-retro new car from Detroit!

If I didn't like the Ruf CTR look so much, I'd backdate my Carrera too! But It'll be fun to have a CTR clone and an RS clone :D .... "is this heaven?"

Jeff Alton 12-03-2004 09:17 AM

That yellow car is hot!! Hmmmmmm

Jeff

jtratza 12-03-2004 01:03 PM

I'll take the yellow one. That is about as bad azzzzzz as it gets.

bigrubberjeep 12-05-2004 01:28 PM

My personal favorite is the yellow one too!
