cant' decide
Help me out here. I need another project. I want to change the body on the car and have a couple of options. One is to backdate the other is IROC bumpers. What do you think?? Cost is not really a factor.
Here is a pic of the car now. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1101965736.jpg Love the long hoods and am leaning that way even though it is more involved. Thanks, Jeff |
Sell the darn thing to me and find yourself a 73 T. Then stuff it with a big motor and some suspension tricks :)
|
Backdate.
A 3.2 carrera with "proper" bodywork is a very cool thing. |

Hmmm, don't really want to sell it, eveything else is already done. Full Elephant suspension and a tweaked 3.2. The interior has got hard backed race seats (differnt from the pic) and RS door panels and RS carpet already. Thinking that going with the TRE fiberglass font fenders, hood and bumper and their rear bumper will shave a fair amount of weight as well. Oh well, I always wanted to learn how to paint!!

Steve, maybe I can package the car up with the extra seats..... Let me guess, you know where a clean 73t is? I am not adverse to that idea either.
Jeff |
Don't you love the "sell the thing advice".
I would backdate. I am liking that much more lately. Have you looked into Damon's backdate kit? I would lean that way cause money is usually an issue with me. Have fun Dean |
Only do IROC if you go the whole way (bumpers, flares, tail). Otherwise, backdate it. Either way, become a GruppeB ba$tard. Resitance is futile.
|
Oh I would backdate that b!tch in a second. Long hood - wide flares RSR in that color blue would be the bomb! You already have the duck - rockers off - lighten that baby up with some fiberglass and you'll have a comfortable carrera rocket.

Jeff:
I may be the sole voice for this opinion, but leave the car the way it is. It looks GREAT! I find that when I have itchy fingers to do something with my car, sometimes just stepping back and looking at it from a different angle just drives home how special it is already. It's the "new air freshener" approach. Sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest difference. That said, drive it like you stole it! BTW, I made my drive up in the SC and had a great time tooling around my old haunts in the lower mainland. Currently, car is safe at my uncle's place in Seattle, waiting for me to import/export it in Jan. Will definitely give you a ring once I get settled. Don't think I forgot about those pints! Do you like scotch? Cheers, |
Thanks for all the advice and thoughts. I think Damon's kit is quite pricey. Looks to b egreat quality though.
Don't be too hard on Poorsha for telling me to sell it. He is a good guy, lives just around the corner! So, leave it with the carrera flares or go with some wider turbo or RSR ones?? Jeff |

Okay, should I sell it then. Buy and early long hood and put a big motor in it??
Jeff |
If you really have your heart set on a long hood....then buy one and upgrade the engine. You can then sell this car and you have a win-win...you get the money for your long hood, and someone else gets a great looking car!
|
backdate. I just bought a mint sc and pulled it to bits, flogged everything i didn't want and got $hitloads of money back to put towards the backdate.
Andy |
No..non NO! BACKDATE! It's not that expensive or hard to do, and it'll give you the look you want. If you want an early car go buy an early car, but don't backdate the exterior, then go crazy on everything else...don't make an RGruppe car out of it...make it a GruppeB car...then later buy an RGruppe-esque car!
Fenders, hood and bumpers! Lights are easy, and you don't have to hunt for stock light buckets... |
Non-contributing post...
That car looks hot... as is. |
Souk, you backdated a car didn't you? If I go that way I will use fiberglass for everything to cut the weight down even more (currently about 2475lbs). The weight is important as I see the track quite a few times a year. What is the difference between "R" and "B"?? Not sure what you meant. Everything else is already done on this car except big brakes. Well and maybe further upgrading to a 3.4! But is goes pretty well now with 964 cams and SSI's with a SeveW chip.
Jeff |
Looks good as is! I've never been fond of butchering any veh to make it something its not whith cheesy fiberglass aft mkt pnl's, flares etc... (which most are) but thats just me. I think your'e better off to sell and buy a long hood if it's the look you want . s.w.b. would be nice! I was wondering where I've seen that car recently, driving up 200th st... cheers Jeff.

Jeff, you are in luck!
I did backdate...search for my "Ultimate Backdating" thread and grab a 6-pack. :) It's easier than people think. Also, I'm building a 3.4 this winter. How's that! :) The R -vs- B Gruppe was to differentiate the difference between backdating to be very historically correct, like doing the interior too, versus backdating to gain a weight advantage and better looks, with little care for historical correctness. The GruppeB way...make it go like stink but have a little respect for history...while not letting history dictate your path. I am soooo disappointed that you don't know about GruppeB :( |
