'70 Wiper Motor Question

The '70 wiper assembly is unique in that the first lever position (above the rest position) is for intermittent operation controlled by two relays.

Mine has been "monkeyed" with by prior owners. Nothing happens in the first position, the second position is slow wipe and the third position is fast wipe. But, when the wiper lever is switched down to the bottom position, the blades do not return to the base of the windshield.

In Vol. 5 of "Up Fixin'", there is a article that discusses how to disconnect the two "troublesome" relays, place a jumper wire between two of the motor contacts and then run a wire from the "53a" terminal on one of the relays back to the "31a" motor contact. This is supposed to make the arms return to rest at the first switch position.

Unfortunately, I am having trouble with the instructions given in the article. Has anyone done this modification and if so, can you describe what you did in detail for me? What color wires do you land up with at each of the motor contacts (Black/Purple, Black/Yellow, Blue, Brown and Red or Red/White)? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I'll bump this for you, because I'd like to here something about this for my car.

I just finished wiring the wiper motor in my '69 and I don't remember having two relays to mess with. I wonder if it changed between the two years.

The '70 911 was the only one with the two relays for the intermittent operation. Kinda like the '72 with the oil filler door - sometimes Porsche "fixes" only take a year to accomplish.

Thanks for the bump, Charlie. We can't be the only two with '70 911s and this issue.

Well, I have a 70, but have never had trouble with the wiper assembly. Rebuilt just about everything else though...:D

I did have wiper troubles on my 73 targa(seized up bearings due to 30 yrs of gunk), in that time I did discover working with the guys at Partsheaven up there that there are a number of different early 911 wiper motor / arm assemblies! Perhaps they can help you...

Both Parts Heaven and EASY are excellent sources for both parts and advice. In fact, I will be going to EASY tomorrow for a monthly R Gruppe gathering there.

Hey Sergio -
I just had to do some work on my 1970E wipers and am happy to report they now work as originally designed. I found some of the contacts were gunked up and more importantly, someone in the past had swapped 2 wires. Do you have a wiring diagram for the '70 model to work with to make sure the right leads are going to the right contacts?

As a side note - Do you have an electronic copy of that article from upfixin? I'd be more than happy to look it over and see if I can shed any light on the situation.

Regards,
Andrew M

Andrew,

Does this help?

Eureka! Thanks to Andrew15's help, I have been able to wire up my '70's wiper motor so that it works preperly with the two relays. Here's how the wiper motor's wiring should be connected:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1103564400.jpg

The wires should be:
Black w/ Yellow - terminal 53b
Black w/ Purple - 53
Red or Red w/ White - Terminal 53a
Brown w/ White - Terminal 31b
Brown - Ground - 31
This wiring, as are the two relays, is unique to the 1970 model.

My car's red wire has a capacitor that was attached to the underside of the dash and then a black wire that went to terminal 53a. I never did get the Up Fixin's relay bypass fix to work. But, now I don't need to.

Glad it worked Sergio!

Wiper Motor Connection

My 1970 wiper system works fine :
- Intermitent
- Slow
- Fast
And wipers park
It took a while but all works fine.

My 1970 T Targa seems to have another Wiper motor connector system than found in other posts
The connector is triangular shaped , but connectors are labeled differently than in most posts. (added some paint through the clock hole)
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1600349889.jpg

Check if yours is the same, because this could be the solution. when they do not park.

If your wires are partially painted like mine remove paint with thinner.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1600350584.jpg

You can retrieve most of the cables with a test bulb.
Remove cables from wiper motor and switch on steering column in different positions with contact on ( you can switch power on without activating fuel pump, as there is a position just before pump start) and measuring if bulb lights up on designated cables
According to schematic found in other posts.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1600350667.jpg

If your relais are in good condition you hear the relais nicely clicking and activating and stopping the blades In the intermittent position,

I placed colored straps on the designated cables
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1600350667.jpg
Green strap are the two Black/grey cables - determined with light bulb - lights up on, on intermittent and Full.
White strap is the Black/purple cable - lights up on Slow

Connect Black/grey (Two cables) on the 53b
Connect Black/purple on 53,
wiper system works in all 3 positions , but they wont park.
You need to connect 2 more cables.

The 2 red cables (with or without the condenser) are permanent 12 v connect them to 53a pin
The brown/white from the same Harness is to be connected to 31b.
Do not forget to connect the brown earth cables.

Your wipers will work and stop at predefined place on intermittent, or when you switch them off
If you heard your relais cllicking as described earlier.

Mine stopped vertically in the middle of the windshield

I had to displace them to the left, as described in the post
https://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_wiper_reversal_files/911_wiper_reversal.htm

Good luck

Still 1970 wiper problems

Hi WMontald
I have been trying for several days to make my wipers behave as described.
They won't park and the intermittent function are working on step two making the wiper speeding up regularly from normal full full speed.
It might perhaps be because one or both the relays are no good even if both of them are clicking?

My other question is the condenser. I cannot find any condenser. Can no condenser be the problem and make the wipers behave strangely? Does anyone know the capacity of the condenser? If I know the capacity I can add one in the system.

WMontald 11-02-2020 11:10 PM

Hi Dynashow,

The switch on the steering wheel has 5 possibilities, 0, 1, 2 ,3 - 5 pull forwards
0 off
1 intermittent : blades work for 5 sec and stop - 5s and stop etc...
2 Slow speed
3 High speed
5 Pull forward : Spray water - activate blades 5 sec

After all actions blades should park if your Relays are working.

You can test if the blade park system works : there should be 12 V on the two red wires, when you switch your blades off or after 5 sec intermittent, you can measure this with a Volt meter or test bulb used to set breaker points.
Good to know is that you can check if everything works even when no wires are attached to the Wiper motor, with the test bulb, so you wont scratch your windshield. (Be careful when raising blades and hood is still open , they can touch the hood)
Attach a test bulb to ground and
set column switch to position 3 , it should light up when other side is on Black/purple wire
set Column switch to position 2 , it should light up when other side is on Black/grey wire
set Column switch to position 1 , it should light up when other side is on Black/purple and when switched of it should briefly light up when on Red wires.

If this is not the case 1 of the relays is not functioning or a problem inside the wiper motor with the park disc element.
You can open the relays , by prying off the metal cap, even when installed in the car and see if they attract , if not they stick or see if they are maybe burned.
Also check if they have a good earth connection and if the connectors on relays are having good contact.
A nifty tool to use for testing all above and checking earth connections is a Power Probe Circuit Tester that you can by online
You can set current on car electrical devices and check earth connections without setting on the ignition so not interfering other circuits.

The condenser is mounted underneath the dashboard.
It is there to avoid unwanted capacitance when the wiper motor is activated.
Wiper motor should work with or without.
Original capacitor is BERU SK 210/3S 0.5uf 110v

After many years my 1970 wiper problem is solved. When I found out that someone, in my cars earlier life, have put in a wiper switch from a 69 model. When I got hold of the right one (911.613.302.00) my wiper operates according to the book.
My old switch (901.613302.04) is now for sale.
