Will driving an older Porsche cause Parkinsons?

There is a high incidence of Parkinsons amoung welders and a high incidence of Parkinsons in steel mill towns. People who breath air that contains traces of metal particulates / oxides.

As I was driving home from work in my 911 with the heat on I began to wonder if it is wise to be breathing air heated by flowing over steel at ~ 600 - 700°C in the heat exchangers. I'm sure the study has never been done but I wonder if there is a high incidence of Parkinsons in people who have owned and frquently driven air cooled Porsches in cooler climates... I hope not but just a thought.

The air that you are breathing wasn't close to 6-700 degrees. Maybe if you routed the exhaust directly to the cabin

Otherwise I wouldn't fret about it & just drive.

edit- oh, I get it, the steel is at 6-700 degrees. What temp. is steel typically welded at?

Some nonferrous alloys as low as 600°C, some austenic stainless would be in the 1200 - 1600°C range. I'm guesing mild steel would also be in the range of 1200°C.

Cool

Yes, driving that car will kill you.

Park it behind my house on the pad immediately.

Breathing the oil mist that passes for heated air on these cars will be a greater risk.

back when i worked on a lot of aircooled vws, i noticed a lot of asbestos looking sleeves around heater box outlets where the hose to the car attached. old 356 and 912s had asbestos around the muffler, under a sheetmetal shell. we're all gonna die!

we're all gonna die!

- very true, John

Well they tell me of a pie up in the sky
Waiting for me when I die
But between the day you’re born and when you die
They never seem to hear you even your cry.
So as sure as the sun will shine
I’m gonna get my share now, what’s mine
And the harder they come, the harder they fall

I always thought my car had it in for me. Now I know it is true. And I thought Christine was a 1958 Plymouth Fury!

Its a lot more likely that a minivan or an H2 will plow into your car and kill you.

I'm too scared to drive it over... between the fear of Parkinsons from the heat exchangers and getting Cancer from the oil fumes... and after randy's post I've got a new Pie phobia...

I say from this Forum profile, its much more likely to cause an obsessive compulsive behavior to polish Fuchs, Simple Green wheel wells, powder coat motor tin, and opine expertly regardless of qualifications on virtually any topic.

Ohhh.... and give a deluded reason to think your $12,000 SC garage queen with its $4000 paint job is somehow worth $25,000+ when no one elses is!!!!

Muhahahahaha!!!
