Question WD-40 opinion: Positive or negative?

My many years experience with WD-40 have been positive. It is a light lubricant, does not harm electrical, or rubber, or plastic. It dissipates over time leaving no hard or sticky residue and is a mild penetrating oil.
The King of Tacoma, rdane , who keeps the economy around Puget Sound alive by completely overhauling his beautiful 911 every year, says otherwise. I value his opinion but want to hear more voices. What say yee?
WD-40 goot / nix goot?

WD-40 was never designed, or promoted, as a penetrating oil, just a light lubricant. If I need to open a stubbern rusty nut, I would use PB Blaster, ot Moove-it, or similar penetrating fluids.

WD = Water Disapater - I believe it goes back to WWII.

A brake through back them, but there are better, more specialized products available today. At this year's SEMA, for example, the makers of PB Plaster had close to a dozen other spray products thhat were designed for various applications/uses. There were also a multitude of other firms with alternatives.

The "WD" stands for "Water Displacing" -- I find it useful in that application, and to clean greasy/oily things. I regularly use it for cleaning guns, motor parts, lubricating building's doors and locks, and most any application where a light lubricant is needed.

I've heard people claim that it's horrible, but have never heard any argument from them that justifies their opinion. Most of their poor opinion is the result of them trying to use it in a way it wasn't designed to be used or is completely unrelated to any "failure" of the product itself.

Ive read for years (even when I was a little kid reading skate board magazines) that wd-40 breaks down the grease that keeps the bearings/wear surfaces lubed...Works to free up or clean and even spray inside a damp distbutor cap..but, not to be used in the place of grease or lubricant..

WD-40 turns to "goo" in time; it is preservative not a lubricant or penetrating oil. Jim

The main ingredient of WD-40 is kerosene. It isn't a lube...decent cleaner for something you'll then wipe down and lube with something else.

Ever seen what happens to kerosene if you leave it out long enough?

I use a lot of wd-40 in my shop on a daily basis but only as an economical metal cleaner.

..Issaquah... Gunter not Tacoma More like bonded servant than king.

No way I would get wd-40 anywhere near a working CIS system. I might use it to clean some of the parts of a CIS system but then I'd wipe it down with a good lube before I put it back together. Better safe than sorry. CIS has enough problems as is.

Jim - do you have advice on various lubes, corrosion protections, etc.? Maybe you can list a task category and then what you think is a (commonly available) chemical for that task.

FIW - you can now buy single cans of Kroil at various mailorder places - ti doesn't have the smell that pbBlaster has.

Then there is the Corrosion Block discussion re Mg trans. recently.

removes grease and tape residue well. also fun to use as a mini blowtorch when you're about 12 years old.

tkrefeld, how do you use Boeshield? I use it on all my woodworking equip. Do you wipe it off or do you let it sit and dry. I leave a thick film. Thanks, jeff

I spray it on the engine and elctricla and just leave it..It leave s clear layer that seems to work excellent...I do find that if you spray it on something that is likely to get quite dirty it will escalate that...

Makes a great cutting fluid for aluminum on a mill or lathe. On the lathe with WD-40 I can get near polished looking finsh cuts. Other than that I use it to prevent rust on tools.

Am I the only one that thinks a WD40 thread is funny, I mean, I've been drinking a few and leaving for dinner in a few minutes, but WD40? are you serious? I'm not trying to be a dick, just find it rather amusing, pointless, in a good way
Diesel/Kerosene in a spray bottle works very well
