To R or not to R

Hi,
This is Richard Wartenberg.
Eric McKenna posted a few shots of my kids a couple of months ago...

Anyhow...
I've got a '70 E. It's been in the family since '72 and I've had it for 3+ years now.

VERY strong 2.2, and still "fairly" stock car, with upgraded front brakes and bilstein suspension.

I like the fact that it's got a roll bar and door pockets, although conceptually they seem to contradict each other. Anybody (everybody??) understand???

It's still got the heat exchangers and I like that too, I still like to drive in the fall, spring and certain nice days in the winter...

I am ADDICTED to the R Gruppe look and concept !!

I am thinking of adding R tail lights and megaphone exhaust (to the heat exchangers)

Here's a few pics. The fuchs are 6.5", the cookie cutters are 7" for track tires, the b&w is an old photo of my aunt racing on steelies back in the day...

What do you all think???

klaucke 12-10-2004 01:50 PM

Looks sweet. After seeing your wheels, I think I'm going to paint my cookie cutters all black, that way they don't really look like cookie cutters.

Reg 12-10-2004 01:50 PM

Hi Richard. Is that Tangerine?

jtkkz 12-10-2004 02:10 PM

I like the steelies look, just get those steel wheels widen and lower it.

I think fuch wheels looks best.

rexav8r 12-10-2004 05:37 PM

colours

The current paint is a "bit" of a mystery...

It isn't the original, you can see the original under some chips in it.
In some light it does look slightly orange-ish but 99% of the time just real red. Definately NOT guards red though!

I like the Fuchs look better too. Only I got the 7" set of 4 cutters for $150. If any of you have a set of 7" Fuchs for $150 stick 'em in the mail to me now and you'll have your cash tomorrow!

I think the gloss black cookie cutter look is at least kind of aggressive looking. If I could use white shoe polish or paint on the letters of the tires I think it might look better though.

Any ideas?

If you Andy Warhol it the color gets real neat !!!

An early car whose history you know (in the family) within a couple of years of its manufacture is freaking priceless, IMHO. My vote is do anything you want that involves bolt-on components - light assy's, bumpers, engine lids, wheels, RS door panels, lexan glass, whatever.

Just save the original parts and try not to whack it too hard... so it can be brought back to OEM spec.

Beautiful car...

Wayne 962 12-10-2004 06:23 PM

I would go with a sport muffler instead of megaphones, at least for the street. The sport muffler is still *way* loud!

-Wayne

rexav8r 12-10-2004 06:42 PM

Which

Which sport muffler do you recommend?

There's quite a few and you can spend anywhere from sane to ludicrous amounts of money on it. (and it's still just a muffler)

I'm definately not after just being LOUD, but the 2-in 2-out in the center sounds WAY better than my stock Leistritz.

What is the downside to megaphones? Just insane - loud?

I haven't heard them personally but I'm told they sound awesome...

Phase 9 Mufflers by Jerry Woods

Zeke 12-10-2004 07:44 PM

Megaphones are usually used, like you said, straight off the HE's. That's straight out pipes! No muffler. CAPISCE?

I don't think you want that. Maybe you'd like something like this?

Phase 9 with cross chamber (muffler of sorts)

http://www.beadform.com/images/911_small.gif

funy1guy 12-10-2004 08:10 PM

IMHO - You can't beat that first pic, beautiful with the fuchs, sans front bumper guards. I'd leave it alone except for race day.

rexav8r 12-11-2004 04:02 AM

yes

OOOoooooo Zeke, now I kinda like THAT !
:D

rexav8r 12-11-2004 04:48 AM

hhmmmm

Hey Zeke...

Just downloaded the pdf catalog from smart racing and took a look at Jerry Woods stuff...

I thought you meant that first photo was the phase 9, but I'm now thinking you meant the 2nd smaller photo is headers to phase 9 to the muffler (cross chamber), am I right??

What is the muffler in the first photo?
Doesn't appear to be JWE???

Phase 9 is a bit pricey for what I'm after right now, also looks like the phase 9 is mainly built for headers and I want to keep my HE(s), maybe I'm off on that.

Who in their right mind would make a pristine 2.2E look like a 911R? (joke)

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1090871421.jpg

Who's your aunt, Denise Mcluggage?

Unless you are racing the megaphones will be too loud. I have a sport muffler that works great.

Nice car!

jtkkz 12-11-2004 08:11 AM

monty muffler

sounds good , not too loud

I agree completely. It is tantamount to a family heirloom. Pass that pristine example down to those nice kids as is. Wait till you can afford someone else's old beater to build an R/RS from.

Stoney

randywebb 12-11-2004 11:46 AM

I like the monty. Mine weighs 17 lbs. (twin cow horn style outlets). It is throaty but not too loud. The mb911 muffler weghs 15 lbs. but is apparently pretty loud.

the stock mufflers are much heavier.

Eric Mckenna 12-11-2004 01:29 PM

Rich,
Hwy man glad to see you active on the board....
Lemme tel ya what I'd do.. I'll come down with my drill, heatgun, scraper and other goodies and we'll have that bad bot LIGHTEr than an R. :) hahahah no.. I am messing I love your car the way it is.. I would do as many have said.. do what ya like as long as it doesn't make the car unable to be returned to it's OE self.
I I'd just get a DANSK 2 in 2 out like I have the old Sport exhaust... the same one Dave C . ( aka MEAT STICK) and I have..
Post some more pic's of that car for the guys to see and post some video of the AX's .:) Ciao Rich..

smart racing-jerry woods

Where would one find Jerry Woods-Smart Racing, on the internet. Jerry Woods site says under-construction. Thanks

rexav8r 12-13-2004 05:27 PM

Here's the Smart Racing home page
http://www.smartracingproducts.com/

and here's a link right into the catalog (.pdf)
http://www.smartracingproducts.com/pdfcat/srpcatalog2004.pdf

The catalog is pretty big so it takes a while for the whole pdf file to load. Jerry Woods Engineering stuff is down in his own section of the catalog.

P.S. Give someone else (wife/girlfriend/tighta$$friend) your wallet before opening this file ! :D

Cornpanzer 12-13-2004 06:12 PM

All I would say is to put the stripes back on, otherwise leave it alone! :D

Eric Mckenna 12-13-2004 07:11 PM

mmmmm leave it alone huh? well no that sounds like fun! ;) hahaha
come on Dave where is your fun side???
R- Gruppe is HOT ROD stuff man.. stock is for concours!!!
Eric

Doug&Julie 12-14-2004 04:19 AM

I vote "go R", but that's because I'm selfish and would love to see a good "R" look car up close!

Cheers!

Right now...nothing. :( Julie and I are saving for a potential major move to the PNW (Portland?), hopefully sometime this year (..er, 2005). So, "The Project" is on hold.

WHEN it's back on, I have two ideas...one is a pretty standard RS replica with a 3.2 (or 3.6?) motor. The other is more of an S/T ultra lightweight replica (I'm really loving those lately!). It will all depend on funding, what I have as a daily driver, and what "mood" I'm in when I finally get this ball rolling.

In my dream, I buy a decent '87-'89 Carrera and "backdate" it to RS look and use that as a daily driver, and turn "The Tomato" into the S/T. ...oh, and keep the Boxster for convertible days. :)

But that's all a dream at the moment. For now I have to live vicariously through y'all.

Thanks for asking! SmileWavy

Doug,
WHy are you guys leaving.. you don't like Ohio anymore?:) hahah

jtkkz 12-14-2004 08:43 AM

you can keep it stock looking on the outside, but modified on the inside (suspension, motor, etc.)

rexav8r 12-14-2004 12:01 PM

What's the best place to buy the side script, I haven't looked anywhere yet. (not even here, sorry Wayne)

Doug, I call first dibs, if you DO move, the 911 can stay HERE !
If you start looking to download it, I'm first in line !!!

http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...s/boldblue.gif

I'd like to put the script back on, then go with R lights, a sport exhaust, re-lower it a bit, consider rally lights (horn grill type like yours Dave) and then just enjoy it until I get the next one (SWB???) to REALLY "play" with...

I think the sport muffler, and the ride height / set-up to include new bushings are the first step.

Eric Mckenna 12-14-2004 12:15 PM

Doug,
I agree the early car should not have to travel that far..:) it's too old and and all.. let it retire here!:)

randywebb 12-14-2004 12:47 PM

Eric, A future welcome to your future home in the PNW.

One thing tho - in order to keep the PNW as good as it is (and esp. as the popn grows) there are some things you can't do here. One is that in Portland you need to smog your car. Second, there are constraints on house and lot design.

The 911 with silver Boxster pic reminds me of what my driveway looked like a few years ago (Boxster is gone now but the older 911 remains).

Doug&Julie 12-15-2004 04:03 AM

Well, now that we've thoroughly hijacked Richard's thread... :D

randywebb - Thanks for the future welcome. (I'm sure by now you realize it's me..er, us...that are moving and not Eric. ...or is there something you want to tell us Eric?) We spent a week in Oregon this October to get a feel for the land, so to speak. We hit Portland, Newport, Ashland, Eugene (briefly), and back to Portland again. We're convinced that Portland is the place for us. So now it's a matter of finding a job and getting out there! I'll look forward to meeting Pelicanites and Rennlisters and PCAers and R-Gruppers when we get out there!

Eric and rexav8r - I've had many thoughts of selling "The Tomato" before moving and just buying another once I'm out there. Still not sure, though, since it IS my first 911. But if you guys are serious, I'd be happy to talk turkey. But before anybody gets all salivatory...the car does have some rust issues (front tank support and door sills), and the "Fuchs" (which were fake) are now gone. But otherwise it's a pretty good car ..oh, and you'd have to promise NOT to part it out.

Back on topic...Richard, what are your thoughts to everybody's comments? Does this picture sway you in any way..??? :p

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1103115815.jpg

Eric Mckenna 12-15-2004 04:25 AM

I think we should link up this winter if we can to talk about Richs stripes and the price of TOTATO's in Ohio if ya know what I mean ;) . who'd be up for a beir and some light grub sometime soon.?
Eric

Doug&Julie 12-15-2004 04:28 AM

Being in a suburb north of Cinci, I'm probably the middle location. We could have a little beer and pizza gathering at my hut if you'd like? Could be fun! Thoughts...???

Eric Mckenna 12-15-2004 05:19 AM

Sounds good to me lemme get with Rich.. and see what's going on in his world.. I know he is leaving for Germany.... on 18th and won't be back until the 22nd.. so...

Eric

Doug&Julie 12-15-2004 05:24 AM

Cool. Just about anytime after new year is good with me (we're traveling over Xmas holiday). Just give me plenty of warning so I have time to "clean the house for guests". When we get closer, I may contact John Meyer and alert some of the other early groupers here. I have a handful of "other" parts I'd love to get rid of (from my aborted '67 912 project). Maybe it'll be a "Pizza and Porsche parts Party". I'll even put "Le Mans" on the big screen...
