Porsche parts CD
Porsche parts CD
Today I picked up the Porsche parts CD I had ordered using the P/N posted here on the Pelican Forum. It is great and just what I expected. It covers every Porsche part from 356B thru 996 (August ’04.) The part number is 000.043.400.05 and costs US$15.56 from your local Porsche dealer. EVERY PELICAN SHOULD HAVE ONE OF THESE! Never again should anyone have to ask for a part number. There are all the exploded diagrams for every year and model Porsche, ’60 to ‘04. Now that there is 21st century technology, perhaps Porsche AG can do the same for workshop manuals, service information, and technical information and up-dates for their (our) early (out of warranty) cars. Oh yes, it is in five languages for everyone around the world. Porsche did it right. Let’s give three cheers for Porsche AG. There is no substitute! " ![]() " ![]() (C) 2004 Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Thanks
Hi Grady,
This is Frank Barrett's nephew. I've got his old 911. We met at his big birthday bash last year. Anyway, the trans is still running GREAT and I'll go pick up one of those CDs tomorrow ! THANKS ! Richard

I don’t think so. PAG is in the business of manufacturing really good automobiles and necessary spare parts. By good business practice (and by law in many jurisdictions) a manufacturer must provide service for their cars. Many dealers incorrectly only focus on the new cars, others do a wonderful job servicing everything from 1950 to date. My point is that it is no skin off any dealer’s nose for Porsche to provide all the technical information for free to everyone. All benefit. Porsche’s ability to sell their produce is highly dependent on their reputation. Fortunately over the years the Porsche name has earned the reputation for high quality sports cars and racing success. Part of that has been from the free flow of technical information to (and from) their customers, dealers, and racers. My point is with current technology, that wonderful communication can be improved even more. There are engineers at Porsche that weren’t born when the 911 was designed. Part of the company mystique should be to educate the new generation to the history. Customer and racer feedback is part of that. I can envision a 30 YO Ferrari engineer who doesn’t know what a 275GTB4 is. I can’t imagine a Porsche engineer who isn’t schooled in a 587/3. Sorry, I digress. I know PAG and PCNA monitor these forums. Communication is a two-way street. Porsche will benefit greatly from providing all the technical information for free. I think the dissemination of the technical means MORE money for PAG and the dealers, not less. Additionally, I think it enhances Porsche’s reputation with their customers (present and future.) Best, Grady

So how does it look compared to the old PET?
How many CD's is it, 1 or 2?

Steve,
It is PET. It is a single CD. There seems to be a slightly different interface but all the info seems to be the same as my older PET6. I can print great exploded diagrams and have current part numbers. Everyone should have this from Porsche. The obvious popularity will encourage PAG to produce more and better editions. Best, Grady

There was a debate a while back about why PCNA wouldn't allow PET to be circulated or sold outright. I guess they now see it your way, Grady, and I'm happy for that.
We all paid more than 15.00 for a pirated copy off the British version. ![]() |

Randy,
I haven’t tried that yet on the new CD. I’ll let you know. My PET6 has that feature. My PET6 is installed on the hard drive, I’ll se if I can copy the new version off the CD without disturbing the original PET6. With my lame old eyesight I use a 21” monitor with 600x800 res. The new CD likes that just fine where PET6 will only work at 1280x1024. Milt, I don’t think I can take credit for that change in policy. Next week I’m going to sit down and use the on-line service info at the dealer. I’ll report back. I’m going to write PCNA and PAG and try and articulate a reasonable argument for a more open technical exchange. Anyone can buy the service, it is not “Dealer only” but they have it priced where few owners can afford the annual subscription. Dave, I think that there is a ratio of 20:1 or more of lurkers-to-posters on this Forum. I would anticipate that would include PAG and PCNA. I can’t imagine a better market research tool. Best, Grady

Grady,
What dealership did you use? Or barring that revelation, what city did you purchase it in?

I am curious as to the (legal) source for the PET CD. Given that the nearest person I trust to work on my car is about 3 hours away (which is like $"mortgage your firstborn child" in towing fees), I've already firmly decided to do my own work. Hunting down parts can be such an incredible headache -- I'd give my 1st gear synchro to have a PET CD.

There is nothing clandestine about this. The CD is a real Porsche Part. The part number 000.043.400.05 is a valid number in Porsche’s parts system. Clearly it is available through any PCNA dealer and PelicanParts.
I paid PCNA retail price at $16.56 plus $1.03 sales tax but no shipping or handling. A few months ago this was discussed on this Forum. That is where I got the part number. Also posted was a number for the Price List CD (000.043.400.06) which now reports as NLA in Porsche’s parts system. It was explained to me that means it hasn’t been superceded yet and some may be at dealers still. I’ll try and get the current retail price list part number. Usually the Price List also contains the Supercession List for every original valid part number – very useful for older cars. Best, Grady

Congratulations Porsche! Knowledge shared is knowledge power.
I often have wondered why we couldn't have all of the information about our cars in virtual form. It would make our cars become even more valuable. Yes believe it or not perhaps a truly virtual car. Many years ago, Porsche proposed the development of a virtual car. Not the virtual car we see on a screen but one that could have easily replacable parts and all parts would be upgradable. I do remember the article being published in Popular Science. In essense they have done this with our 911's however not intentionally. If the information about our cars was easily obtainable and virtual as we envision it, our cars could just possibly become a virtual one too. They could go one step better, and put the information on their website and simply send us a bill for access. Good luck, David Duffield |

I've heard about this, but I haven't seen it yet. I'll have to order a copy and see if it actually shows up...
Somewhere I heard it was only available in Europe.... -Wayne

As noted above, I don't think that there's any great mystery involved here. I believe Grady is referring to this thread from a few months ago where you requested the part number. Its readily available here. While each version has it strengths, overall I prefer the available pdf format of the new version over my older versions of PET that required installation. Tim ![]() |
