I need help replacing 915 tranny seals
My 915 tranny is leaking around the front shaft seal and around the cv flange. Can both of these seals be replaced with the tranny in the car?
I did read the tech tip that the front one could on a 356 tranny, but how about on a 915 If so , how? Thanks Rick ![]()

To do the side ones, pull the CV axle assy and remove the drive flange bolt. Pull the flange out. You will have a hard time getting the gasket out and a gasket puller will help but don't scratch the metal surfaces. Oil and tap the new gaskets in evenly.
I suspect you will need to do a partial drop (a "tilt") at min. to get to the front one. Somebody will post for you on that. Do a search and see what else youcan find on this. I would drive the car to a car wash place and hose down well with Castrol purple and their wand type spray washer. This will get it clean and a lot more fun to work on. Be really careful if you use a press. washer. Also, keep the grease and grime out of the storm sewers - they drain to the lakes, rivers, and the Gulf where the fish and oysters live.... I always call around to find a car wash place that recycles their wash water. You can also paint it orange and blue.... or -hey - crimson would be even better..... |

I'm not even sure that a full-fledged "partial" drop would be necessary. If you unbolted the tranny mounts, disconnected the tunnel linkage (and wiring), and lowered the front a couple of inches, it'd probably give you enough clearance to get in there. .... But then, you're left with the hassle of trying to get the seal off without damaging the shift linkage shaft. That, my friend, could be a hassle.

"and lowered the front a couple of inches" - I don't think this will help much as the shift rod will still be in the tunnel limiting the drop. Either do from this job from inside the tunnel (PIA in my opinion but I have big hands) or drop the engine and transmission. Jim

The transmission drive flange seals can be replaced in the car. I've done them on my 914 and 911sc.
The shift rod seal- here's what I did without dropping anything... shifter rod seal r and r in car.

Good pt. The poster must have been either removing or replacing the engine to not have the shift rod in there.
Are you sure all 3 items leak? It would be a lot easier to do the sides and see if that fixes it. |

Good point, Jim. I had forgotten the engine has to slide back a couple centimeters to drop the front. My bad.

Man o Man. I have this same problem and I've been dreading it but it leaves a mess on my driveway.
Do you have to disconnect the shift coupler to put the seal on? I couldn't find a good picture in the Bentley Manual. If anyone has, please tell me what page it is on.

I don't see why you just don't drop the motor/tranny out together. All the fuss you'll have to go through to try and get the 915 to an angle to replace the seals, might as well just drop it out where you'll have plenty of room.

I was able to replace the front shift shaft seal without removing the engine \tranny . I took a long screw driver and filed the end down to a point (I found that idea in another thread) . Went under the car and using a hammer drove the screw driver into the seal. Be very careful not to slip and drive the point into the sealing area on the tranny itself. Then prey rearward and the bearing should come out. The most problem that I had was getting the "tool " to puncture the seal enough to get it to stick with out nick the tranny wall.
Yes you will have to remove the coupler from the shift shaft. Take your time Rick
