Look at this engine mess !!!

I bought this engine on e-bay. described as:
fresh rebuild by Mike Callas of Rennsport, fresh rings, JE Pistone, bearings, seals.. this engine is build to last.

So, after just 50 miles of normal driving, about all the cylinders leaked at the head ar, noisy camshafts, bad idle.

After disassembly we found silicon sealer mess inside the engine, cam lubrication tubes pluged up, valve guides worn, piston ring gap 1.5 mm and so on.

With all this mess I can not recomend Mike Callas

yasir 12-25-2004 01:08 PM

Sorry to hear about the mess but did you see the receipts about the rebuilt from the PO ? May be the ebay guy pulled a big one on you,who knows ? The best thing would be to call Mike Callas first and confirm the rebuilt before starting this debate here, just my .02 cents

Excellent comment, Yasir. i don't know Mike Callas, but I'm sure he's gonna have something to say.

I'll second that. Let's see Steve's receipt and here from him. Also post the sellers name if you want to find the real culprit. Of course I assume that you confirmed with Steve that he did build the engine BEFORE you bought it, right?

RANDY P 12-25-2004 01:56 PM

yep. You might own the core...

happy holidays..

Well, it looks like it had the JE pistons at least!! Just trying to brighten your day with a little humor! That sucks, lets see this clowns name.

I've heard good things about the Mike Callas Rennsport shop outside Houston. I've been to the shop and got a tour from his very helpful wife since Mike was out. Shop is great with a treasure trove of classic Porsches including some very nice track cars. I'd be surprised if he did that but here's his info:

Rennsport
6031 Highway 36 North, Sealy, Texas 77474

Yeah, unless you have receipts that confirm what the seller said I wouldn't assume that Callas was the culprit.

But anything is possible. I've heard some really nasty things about Hennessey the guy who hot rods Vipers.

ChrisBennet 12-25-2004 03:45 PM

Looks like detonation took some chunks out of the pistons (@ 12 o'clock in your picture). BTDT

What are you complaining about, I don't see a single broken headstud :)

cmonref 12-25-2004 04:59 PM

Threaded rod used for head studs? How long are THEY gonna last?

Here some more details about the purchase of this engine.
The seller Mr.Steven Holson stated that this engine was rebuild by Mike Callas and I DID call before I bought the engine and got confirmation.
I paid $ 4500.- incl. shipping.
Upon engine arrival I immediately noticed "a dirty siliconed engine" with oil and black spots around the cylinder - head area.
Confronting the seller, he called Mike Callas and they concluded that the things I noticed are merely a cleaning issue, the engine was rebuild but not nicely, and I got a check for $ 750.-
So I cleaned and detailed the engine, installed all in my car and the the big bad surprise. What a waste of my time -
I had to remove and disassemble to find out the truce. And now have to do a full rebuild on it.

That was the auction

Does anyone has a e-mail from Mike Calllas??

Thanks, Harold

Hey Harold, got any good leads on a set of early 911 sports seats? ;) Guys, IMHO, this is a case of what goes around...

ChrisBennet 12-25-2004 05:32 PM

Something seems odd. I can't imagine an outfit like Callas using red silicone like that. Perhaps this Holson did have a motor rebuilt by Callas and he's mistakening it for the motor he sold you?

Last 2 reply's are very unprofessional indeed.

If there are no sellers, there would be no buyers.

No thanks for those, harold

EXACTLY Harold...most of us who post here are "mere" enthusiasts, not professionals. The professionals who do post here clearly identify themselves as such, and they also offer much helpful advice. I seem to only see you on the boards when you have something to sell...OR...something to ***** about. In either case, it's "buyer beware", right? ;) (edit: "*****" refers to a female dog)

450knotOffice 12-25-2004 07:24 PM

C'mon now, pwd...

No matter what you might think of Harold, it appears that he still bought a very expensive, supposedly rebuilt, paperweight. Nobody should be lied to and ripped off like that.

Obviously I have not been around very long but it seems you may have been wronged by him at one time?

krichard 12-25-2004 07:48 PM

aren't you the guy selling a '67 912 roller in poor condition for $5500.00? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

The buyer elected not to buy the spare engine.
. Not giving anyone a free pass here but it sounds possible that the rebuilt Rennsport engine was sold as the motor in your Ebayer's car.
