Porsche Crest 911SC Heat Exchanger Upgrade

I couldn't find enough solid input on this but does anyone feel that the SSI SS heat exchangers are worth upgrading on my 82 911SC ? I don't mind dropping a grand to get a few more horses and a cooler motor. I want to pass smog and not be a loud monster and hadn't thought about replacing the stock muffler unless I have to. Any thoughts

If you are located in CA, passing smog will be challenging, at least if you ahve to do smog 2 (the tread mill). Other places, e.g. WA, people pass smog without catalytic convertors. The fact is that SSI backdate the routing of the exhaust, not allowing room for a convertor. The main reason for the restrictive routing of the exhaust on your SC is the fact that both banks' exhaust had to be put through one convertor on the driver's side.

So, if you don't worry about smog, the SSI are a very good upgrade and can give you some nice improvement in power and driveability. To make them worth the while, you may want to upgrade cams and adjust the mixture to a richer one.

I have SSI's on my 83SC and they are great.First off I was lucky to find someone selling a new set in the box for $700.00 and that included shipping to my door!! I live in Orlando and we do not have emission testing so that was not a issue. You can feel that the engine breathes better because the car pulls harder,I think most people will agree that they add 10-15 hp on a SC.Plus they will probably last a lifetime, give quicker heat and just look so nice.I recently added one of mb911s 2 in 2 out mufflers and this car rips!! You will have to change one of the oil lines but thats about it.If you are going to keep the car I say go for it.
