tough one becasue the 1985 is still in smog world, so you can not just plunk any motor into it, not is it an ideal race car starter....a 3.2 would cost you about $6K so you are asking $13K a decent price I would guess.

$13K plus sourcing a motor plus installation plus shipping costs plus incidentals. Add another $3K. Nice 85's can be had for $15K all day long. It's not a give away.

Rollers can be had for under $4000. A rebuilt 915 can be had for around $1,200. Even if I had a 3.2 laying around I probably wouldn't pay more than $5K. As mentioned above $4000 would be a fair price.

IMO if its in excellent shape (which it should be at that mileage) & truly just needs the engine, then you can probably sell for $7k. I'm not saying I would pay that, but there are people out there that will. Rollers for $4k and less are out there but generally prettyrough & missing bits & pieces. For someone planning to install an engine themselves (as opposed to getting a shop to do it) I'm sure its possible to find a good 3.2 for less than $6k (there are people on the board who have found decent 3.6's for $6k or $6.5k) with a little patience.

Last year I was researching rollers and it seems like you are in the ballpark. It is a desirable color which helps. That said, it may take a while to find a buyer. You might find it easier to sell if you put a motor in it.
The conclusion I came to after looking for a while was that it would have been cheaper in many cases to "make my own" roller (buy a running car with good bodywork and sell the engine and transmission out of it) than buying a roller that needed any bodywork, interior etc. Todd (tholyoak) had a nice '86 roller for sale this fall for $7000 and he ended up putting a motor in it. Perhaps he couldn't find a buyer for a roller? I wish I had the money, I thought it was a good deal. Heck, it's still a good deal with the motor. FS: '86 911 Carrera $7000, Woburn, MA "tmsoko" sold his '85 roller, you might want to PM him and see what he sold it for. -Chris

That car as you describe it with a very good engine should fetch mid to high $teens at this time of year. you don't list a location, that can have alot of influence in the sale price.
The problem is, the sum of the parts does not equal the whole when it comes to non-running Porsches. Yes, $7k for the car and $6k for a good engine would make the total investment in the low $teens, but the prospective buyer market is diluted because of the risk. Not being able to drive the car and assess the condition of it means the prospective buyer needs to take your word for it and trust you. i suppose a buyer could get a PPI done on a non-running car but it's value would be less than if the car ran. That usually means a discounted price, sometimes up to $5k which would still make the price fair but not a killer deal. Please note that I am in no way making a statement of your trustworthiness, if anything I am trying not to do so. I am refering to my observations of the market in general. If i was in the market for a carrera your price of $7k would not scare me off but it would not keep me awake at night in anticipation either. You will probably be able to sell it near that price. Who knows, maybe you will be able to make contact with someone who has an engine and you can partner up, install the engine, and sell it for full market value? Also of note is that this time of year is the worst time to try and sell a Porsche. If your situation allows you would be better off waiting until springtime. EDIT: I just noticed your phone number puts you in Southern California and most likely south Orange County. this is good because more engines are available here and the winter is not as severe, and bad that more used Porsches are available for sale so you have more competition. So have you abandon your thread in the "Porsches For Sale" area?
