LOwering rear end on 74 911s

I took my car to the shop today with the intention of having the rear end lowered to match the front of the car. I have too much of a rake look to have more of an even plane. The guy doing it says there might not be too much to play with and doesn't know if it will be possible achieve what I want. My understanding is that the trailing arm has a couple of adjustment bolts that will allow lowering. Am I right?

Thnaks in advance for ay replies!!

OK, I'll be the first to chant the forum manra. "Get Wayne's Book." Ride height adjustments are covered there in detail.

Lowering the rear is much more involved than lowering the front. There is an eccentric bolt, but it will only change the height by maybe 1/2 - 3/4 of an inch. If the eccentric is already maxed out, or if you need to lower beyond this range, you need to re-index the rear torsion bar.

edit - I'm not sure when the eccentric bolt was introduced, and it strikes me now that in '74 there was not one.

Some of this procedure is covered here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_suspension_bushings/911_suspension_bushings.htm

After you're done. Don't skip an alignment, and you should very likely get corner balanced as well.

Factoid...the eccentric was first used around 77-78 ( although Chuck Mooreland will likely correct me to say 76)....but it wasn't 74.

Even so, the factory shipped the cars with the eccentric all over to one side...which only allows RAISING the car ( in case the bars sagged over time....crazy Germans !).

Does this alignment shop work regularly with 911's? If not, find one that does. Jim

I know I have the eccentrics in my '76 (Carrera), and a friend of mine does not have them in his '76 S.

Does lowering or raising the rear change the camber? How about the front?

a 74 is not likely to have the eccentric bolts. to lower it, you would have to re-index the torsion bars, which is labor intensive. are your rear spring plate bushings worn? if so you have a good excuse to replace the plates with the later style or with the sway-away spring plates (which are easier to adjust).
