Today I cleaned the trans. top to bottom and repainted the mounting bracket and bushing mounts. The bracket should be cool enough to remove from the oven in just a couple of minutes. My wife thinks I am a nut case. "Honey, what's that awful chemical smell, I smell?" "Oh, nothing dear, just baking the parts." Sigh |
More cleaning, more cleaning!!!! How about those banana arms, and front A arms??? Can you clearly read the bolt markings on the head?

What about cleaning or replacing the collapsable spare wheel; a frequently overlooked item.

When my "other half" tells me that I have a problem when it comes to my P-Car, and the way I'm always cleaning it, I just tune in to this forum and I realise that relative to you guys I'm almost normal!!!!!

If thats the mag case from your S, you might want to consider coating it with at least some clear coat. Mag will oxidize with no coating. The oxidation is fast and can be terminal to Mag. They did coat/paint the original engine and trans cases. Looks good though! Happy building! |
i know my case was coated, there where flakes of paint everywhere
that was why i brushed it to beging with there was no coating on the top side though , that was nice and clean dark grey so i imagined i could just brush it , let it oxidize till it's nice and grey again... and leave it you mention it could be terminal ? in what sense, it would "rust" throug? damn, there goes my dark grey plan... |
Its the formation of MgO. Oxygen is in contact with the surface of the metal. Electrostatically the oxygen atoms in the air will scavenge Magnesium atoms from the case. This scavenging of mag atoms is what results in the pitting I am talking about. The process will continue until there is no Oxygen or Magnesium left, or till the environment is changed. The pits will grow deeper and deeper into the wall and the case will become weaker for one thing and could end up leaking for another. Guys will argue as to whether or not it will kill an engine.
There is a reason magnesium(as well as zinc) is used as a sacrificial anode to protect other metal components in certain water systems. At the extream, for example, engines that have been left in the elements and not turned over for a long period of time wil corrode on all surfaces such that the parts ar not usable. A good example is the mfi throttle bodies. TB's on a running car stay in good condition. Those that have been sitting will pit on the ID where the butterflys are. The pitting will cause poor sealing and then you can't adjust the idle. Jeeez, I'm really blabbing now, enough!!! |
Oxidation would be a good reason to keep your car in an Argon filled bag. Just a thought:D !

Dennis is right on. This is the reason Porsche applied protective coatings – Tectyl and other. The only situation where I wouldn’t apply a protective coating is a race engine or transmission that would be re-disassembled in a few days.
When it is time for a rebuild (engine or trans) it is very important to have it very clean prior to disassembly. You don’t have to clean dirt out of an engine if it wasn’t there in the first place. We all need to remember that the “automotive environment” is a very harsh place. We put all of out cool parts in harm’s way whenever they are in use. Protection is in order. Best, Grady |
I'm borderline OCD. Over the years I've cleaned the engine bay with citrus cleaners and s. green. Now that I've taken the engine down to the case to be split level, I would suggest watching out what cleaners you use. I can see in a number of places where it looks like a chemical process took place on threads. Re. OCD I find myself out in the garage polishing places on the case that will never be seen...this is of course after my Prozac prescription ran out. :-|
If I was doing this over again, I would spend much more time cleaning the engine before I started opening it up. -h |

The point where cleaning and engine stops being functional and starts being cosmetic is the line IMO, anything over that line is obsessive behavior. My engine aint all purdy but doan leak a drop of oil and is very, very functional.
Having said that, I enjoy looking at beautiful engines as much as anyone. I just don't want to be the guy who has to do all that work. |
