Plug wires?
Is there a better plug wire end connector than the factory BERU? I just spent 2.5 hrs diagnosing a rough running problem in my 84 that turned out to be a bad connector. Fortunately I had an extra one around to fix it with. The problem is, I bought these wires when I did my rebuild/upgrade in May. I thought, might as well replace the wires too, that way everything will be new!! Oh well. Just seems like these should last a little longer. The good news is I now know that every sensor and motronic part on my car checks out to spec!! Yes, I know, should have checked the simple stuff first!! Plug wires were last on my checklist!! Oh well!!
Let me know if you use a different plug connector and what you think about it. I am going twin plug soon so I need to make a good choice. Thanks, Jeff

Magnacors on my 72T are great. Installed them with a Pertronix setup - recommended by Steve W among others - and the car runs better. Also read good things about Clewett plug wires. The Clewett web site has good twin plug info.
A search on Beru's will reveal other stories similar to yours....

Scott, thanks, that was very fast!! I never thought to check with Steve, even though I market his products up here! Ooops! Clewett has some awesome stuff, but I am going 964 distributor. Thanks again, I am also looking for something that I can stock for clients.

Jeff - before you start buying twin plug project parts - check out the crankfire ignition system Clewett has developed (www.clewett.com) There are some interesting threads on this system on the engine rebuild site....
Luck on your projects.

To late..... I already have my distributor. I looked long and hard at the Clewett stuff. Decided to go with 964 and a steveW chip. If I was going carbs or individual throttles, I would difinetly use the Clewett stuff. For me the 964 seems the easy route for tuning. But this will be my first twin plug, maybe on the next one.

The best plug connectors I have found are from a Toyota Corolla with first generation Dodge Intrepid 3.5L wires running through them.
They work so well that I can gap my plugs at 0.080" without a miss. Try that on a set of brand new Beru or Magnecor! -Joe 86 3.2 |

It appears that our host now carries what appears to be identical to what I developed on my own for my 3.2 in the Clewett Engineering High Performance Ignition Wires.
They look very much like my Chrysler/Toyota setup from what I can tell from the pictures, hollow tubes with resistor cable inside the pug connectors, heavy duty rubber plug tips. Best of all, no separate plug connector internal resistor to go bad. Too bad they were not available back when I was in the market. Cheers, Joe Last edited by stlrj; 01-02-2005 at 06:15 AM.. |
