Angry Fuel filler door release help!

Help! I need a close up pic of the fuel filler door release showing how the stupid spring goes back in! I disassembled to paint the filler area and can't get it back working again. I am working on a 1970 911.

Thanks!
-Dan

Dan, I'll shoot a photo of mine tonight. It is a 1980 but should be the same.

Dan, that last shot shows the correct orientation.

The problem is that the spring ends need to be brought together -- or at least within a few millimeters -- and secured.

That's going to require tools, ingenuity and 2-3 very small nylon ties (at least, that's how I did it).

When the spring is sufficiently collapsed, the coil will be distorted so that it's hard to get the cotter pin through.

Put on safety goggles or glasses, Set aside half a day and pull up something comfortable to sit on. You're going to be wrestling with it for a while.

Oh, and you'll never disassemble one of those again when you're done. Trust me.

I didn't find it too difficult to reassemble the release. Put the spring in position agains the fender mounted part, then use the pin to hold it in place. Use the other latching part to collapse the spring. Pull the pin out so the latch can clear the pin, while keeping the spring collapse, then slide the pin through the whole thing. Sounds easy, but it'll work. The spring does deform, but I found there to be enough room to slide the pin through.

Good luck.

Thanks guys. Yes I'd rather do an engine drop than mess with this thing! I took a look at a 912 this afternoon to see exactly how it goes. I messed with it for about 20 min this evening and had it very close but not quite there yet.
