911 Door speakers

What would be a good midprice speaker that will fit in original hole with original (or plain) cover....not wanting to get into high $ stereo, which my old ears can't hear that well anyway.

MQ Quart makes a 5.25" speaker that fit in my front doors just fine, with the stock grill. Pretty moderately priced as I recall.

I think I paid about $400 installed price for the mid level MB Quart door Speakers. The higher end were about $600 but the mid level was fine for me. It's hard to distinguish the nuances of the two with my Targa's wind noise and a Dansk dual out behind me.

Wow!!! I think I paid about $100 for mine, and I installed them myself in less than an hour using the factory wiring and grills.

Holy tomoly!!!! $400- $600

My doors are Madisound 6102-4 6.5" Polypropylene Woofers. @ $52.50 for 2. The rear are Eclipse 4X6 coax and the Targa bar tweeters are Audax.

Door speakers take an hour to install maybe - on three or more beers!!

Sounds like I got screwed on the price of the speakers. However, these required different wiring and a different grill than my originals. A terminal block for the wiring was installed inside the door. This may have to do with the amplifier setup I had in place. A mounting bracket was screwed to the metal of the door then the speakers mounted into that bracket. My factory speakers came out with the side panel. I just finished installing the moisture barrier plastic so I got to see the actual speaker install for the first time last week. The speakers had to come out to remove the side panel.

I can tell you my install would have taken considerably more than an hour.

Yeah... the price seems high. You can get very good speakers from most of the major companies for between $150-$250/pair.

The main point is to buy fairly recent speaker models. Speaker technology (and the materials) has improved greatly over the past few years.

I put a set of MB Quart 6.5" in the back and used the factory grills. Fit perfectly.

Mid-level may not be the same models, so maybe you didn't get screwed. The law of diminishing returns does apply to HiFi tho.

Not much to see...the speakers and grills fit using the existing mounting holes. End of story.

Take a look at your current installation. If your current setup is held in place by only three or four screws, additional drilling will be required to install MB Quart speakers. The sheet metal drills very easily so it's no big deal. I'd like to say I took mine apart so you can see the installation, but it just happened that I'm working on my door panel and speakers today. With 1/2" of ice on the ground, I'm stuck at home.

In this photo, you can see that the speaker frame is secured through the door panel to the sheet metal by three screws. You can also see the crossover circuit inside the door. It was only secured by a couple pieces of sticky tape on the back so needless to say when I took my speaker off, the CO circuit was loose sitting on the bottom. I'm building a better bracket and will re-attach it to door. You can't use your old CO circuit and must use the ones that come with the MB Quart Speakers, so you'll have to install this also.

I took a second photo to show the speaker itself which attaches through the frame with four more screws. Because of the length of the screws, they also go into the door sheet metal. My speaker is just set in place for this photo since I'm still mounting my CO circuitry back in place. After the speaker is installed, the MB Quart grill pushes into place around the speaker and fits over the speaker inside the frame. To remove it, you need to insert a thin punch or screwdriver and carefully pry it out. At least for my 79SC, this design is totally different from my stock installation.

Question - how did you install 6.5" round diameter speakers in the rear deck of a 1984 Targa when the original speakers were 4"x6" oval? And they fit perfectly? I'd also like to see a phtot of that. Thanks.
