Excellent vs Good

The other day I looked at a 1970, 911T. that is very nice. The engine was rebuilt by a reputable porsche mechanic and the owner has kept up with the rust through the years. The front pan was replaced some time back. I did notice tell tail signs, bubbles, peaking from under the sill plates. The 901 is original and first gear is problem free according to the owner.

As part of my research I checked to see what Bruce's market watch had to say about the car and then his rating system of poor, good, and excellent. My question for you guys, or someone out there is, what are we talking about when we go from good to excellent? Can someone explain the difference between the two? Thanks, Clinton

Clinton, only Sweet Old Bruce knows the nuances of his rating system. I'm not joking. Take the values in EXCELLENCE with a huge grain of salt, let your own judgement be you guide. Remember, with the early cars it is condition-condition-condition! Rust is scary stuff and labor intensive to fix.

Excellent would be a car like Paul's (pwd72s) or Brian's (SoCal911SC) ex-SC (sorry, only two I've seen in person!). Pristine, original paint, pristine, clean, beautiful, oh and did I mention pristine?

imho the "excellent" cars are ones that look like they belong on the showroom floor.

By Jeff's standards, you can't buy an excelent car for what Bruce says you can.

His ratings make no sense. 911T's trade hands for everything from 2K to 20K, but his "poor" to "excellent" range is much smaller.

Take digital pictures of the car and post here. You'll get lots of real world prices and experience that will help more than Bruce's values.

There is no way BA's values for an 'excellent' car are set to describe a 'showroom' condition 30 year-old 911.

My hypothesis is that he takes the sale prices he collects then defines the 25th percentile sale as the theoretical 'poor' car, 50th percentile as the 'good' car, and 75th percentile as the 'excellent' one.

These cars are 30 years old now, the numbers that are in 'showroom' condition are very small overall, and statistically insignificant therefore above the BA radar. Also many of the truly excellent cars are never advertised other than by word-of-mouth, suggesting he would have no data on those sales.

Even Bruce Anderson himself mentions cars that are "Beyond excellent"

Obviously, if there is a category for beyond excellent, his definition of excellent is not the same as absolutely perfect. Excellent for a 35 year old used car is going to be different from an "excellent" Carerra GT.

Try relaying 'good' and 'excellent' to the women you have been with. (Female BB members, take the opposite approach.) Good is good (which is fine), but nothing tops excellent. Excellent is something you remember forever, while good dissapears into obscurity. Note: Good tends to still blow bubbles.

You really need to look at the current market by viewing many cars to gety a feel for this. On the 73 and earlier cars it is really tough. IMO a good to very good early car would have little to no rust. Rust repairs would be o.k. if done well. Many of these cars probably would have been repainted and should look it (nice paint). Some modifications and updates over the years would be fine, and welcome in many cases. The interior should be good, but needing some attention would not bump it out of the good category. Again, things like non-original seats and such would not be a problem if well done. In the good cateogry, I think many cars that require rust repair would fall here. These cars should be mechanically sound and good drivers as is, but may require substantial maintenance (such as shocks, bushings, etc.) to suit the new owner. When you think about it, what is a poor condition 1970 911T going to look like? Probably lots of rust, crappy paint, bad interior, etc.

Excellent and beyond would be either cars that are in very good original condition with no rust, or cars that have been fully restored. Cars that are time capsule cars - original condition and look like they left the show room last week would not be in any category. These cars stand on their own.

Just one man's opinion.

"Excellent" would be what the owners on this board see when they are selling. Good or even poor is what they see when commenting on your car in "what's this worth" threads. You on the other hand want to purchase "good" and sell "excellent".
That's why SCs are worth 8K to 12K because they are poor or good unless they are a board owners. Then they are excellent and worth 25K.
