How do you measure metric stud length?
I ordered some metric intake and exhaust studs from a supplier in Texas (obviously not Pelican). I ordered 8mm x 50mm and 8mm x 60mm. The studs they sent are 65mm and 75mm. I've always thought metric studs are measured by total length. They appear to measuring the length above fixed end. So what's the correct way to measure a metric stud?

If you ordered a stud from a "normal" hardware place, I think you'd go by the overall length.
But... Porsche describes studs by the exposed amount (in the PET at least). For example, from actual measurement I know the long stud that joins the engine, transmission (and half of the starter) on '84-86 Carrera's is 122mm long and has 102mm exposed. This is the Porsche description for that stud: Parts # 999.062.192.02 stud M 10 x 102 I probably still have the too short studs from that particular lesson. :rolleyes: -Chris |
I found these studs on Pelican http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/POR_911M_enginD_pg3.htm#item14 which are 8mm x 60mm but are actually 76mm end to end. So I guess there is a legitimate issue, but...
With this other supplier, I didn't order a specific part, I ordered an 8mm x 60mm stud. They should make good, but it's still annoying when you have a box (OK boxes) of parts you're trying to get installed as time permits and when you finally get time, you just have another set back. Some days I can't see any light at the end of the tunnel :( Oh well, I sent an order to Pelican with a writen description of the studs. I guess I'll work on the box of new fuel lines :) |
Where did you order from? Did you get ARP stuff?

Priceton, these are just intake studs to mount the Carrera intake so there's nothing special about the material, just the size appearantly. I'll be sure to let the other Houston Pelican's know about the "fun" I've had with this Texas supplier. Don't worry, my rod and head studs are ARP :)

I find that supply houses will send you something close if they don't have exact. To err on the side of longer (rather than shorter) would be acceptable in most cases. I know I had a problem with carb manifold studs that had to be the exact length of they hit part of the carb. Most other times, 5mm longer doesn't make too much difference.
