Curt:
How many of these TAG blocks exist? You have one, then there's the on from eBay; there can't be that many around.

Porsche built 25 engines for McLaren. They scored 25 victories and 3 World Championships. Mine is Nr. TTE PO 1-44.

25 engines doesn't seem like a lot for 2 blocks to show up; I wonder how many others are out there for sale?

Wil

If this article is correct I think that you have been vindicated.

"Unbeknown to most, in 1992 Porsche had designed and constructed a 3.5 liter V10 F1 engine in response to the very heavy and less than successful V12 engine that was used by the Footwork team._ This V10 F1 engine had been developed in complete secrecy and had been denied by Porsche ever since._ Given the lightweight and the compact nature of the V10, it was the perfect starting point for a new LMP power plant; modern and without the inherent disadvantages of the aging flat six. The engine was increased in capacity with possibilities for both 5.0 and 5.5 liters configurations through an increase in stroke and a slight increase in bore._ The ACO mandated engine intake restrictors made the pneumatic valve system of the F1 engine redundant (with the inlet restrictors limiting revs by restricting airflow), so the system was discarded in order to fulfill the aim of longevity and simplicity of construction and maintenance. "

Jim; Good Point. I'm sure that the CGT (ex-Le Mans racer) V10 was designed more as a reaction to the unsuccessful Footwork engine rather then a derivitive of it. Porsche as a company would be long gone if they didn't learn from their mistakes and learn how to lemonade out of a lemon.

Technology development footnote, many successful products and technologies have risen phoenix-like out of the ashes of failure. Good companies never completely discard failed ideas, but rather continue to develop bits and pieces of failed ideas even if the underlying concept was a failure. Often these bits and pieces develop into a very successful idea.
