Post Failing Vehicle inspection

I have been trying to pass vehicle inspection for a while now and I keep failing because of high carbon monoxide. I used to get through by taking off the oil cap but now when I do that, the readings get worse. Does anyone have any advice on this? I am located in Memphis Tn.

Have you tried adjusting the mixture while on a exhaust analyzer?

When was the last oil and valve service?

Get the car as hot as possible. Make sure the oil is new and the air cleaner is clean or take it out.

When they are doing the test there are RPM ranges they have to stay within. Ask the technican to stay at the very lowest of the range. This should make a big difference.

If all esle fails adjust the linkage or mixture to get through inspections and re adjust after.

How is your ’82 SC configured? Is the CAT still in place and in good condition? Mike is correct, you need fresh oil. Does it have fresh gasoline? What is the recent tune-up history? What are the cranking compression test and cylinder leak test numbers?
Chris has good suggestions.

Your SC should pass most state emissions test with flying colors unless something is wrong. Find it and fix it.

Best,
Grady

I did not pass in Colorado at first and had to find a place that saw no evil. I ended up buying a new cat that I never put on for my 78 SC. The guy passed me for the right price. I have a brand new cat I could lend you to get your car to pass if you think you need it. If you pay shipping back and forth. Let me know. I think it should fit for your car. Good luck! I want to keep the cat in case I sell the car and new owner wants it.

Failing Vehicle inspection

Thanks Guys, I think that you got me pointed in the right direction. My air filter, and my oil was changed before the inspection so, I believe it is time for a tune-up, valve adjustment, etc.

My '78 will not pass in Utah until I lean it way out.
The PO had a portable exhaust gas analyzer (Gunson's Gastester, digital CO analyzer) that he included with the car. He showed me how to dial the mixture down, then raise the RPM back up to 950.
Easily passes with flying colors. Back at home, put it back up to Porsce specs, and done until next year.
